The shooter who killed five students at Northern Illinois University on Thursday was a lauded sociology student who earned the Dean's Award in 2006, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
Police identified the gunman as Stephen Kazmierczak, 27. He transferred last year to the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana.
"He had stopped taking medication and become somewhat erratic in the last couple of weeks," NIU Campus Police Chief Donald Grady said.
Kazmierczak had a shotgun and three handguns during the attack, police said Friday.
...
The gunman, a former vice president of NIU's Academic Criminal Justice Association, wrote about social justice on an Internet site, the paper said.
...
In a paper he helped write two years ago, he described his interests as social justice, corrections, political violence and peace, the Sun-Times said.

Here in Kirkwood, Missouri there was a tragedy, I believe it was on Monday. At a city council meeting some angry man with a gun came in and started shooting. He quickly targeted the police officers that were attending, and killed three cops. He killed one other person (I think) and injured some others. I believe he shot himself as well.
This man knew that in this gun-free zone the only people carrying would be cops, and he targeted them. It’s entirely possible that people be free to exercise their rights in Missouri might have saved lives.
I hear you.
I have seen very crazy folks - I used to work for a bank whose HQ was near a plaza with a big fountain. A total nutjob woman “lived” by the fountain. We used to call her “ducky” because when you’d walk by on the way to lunch she’d quack like a duck at you. One very snowy day I saw a trust officer from the bank with a policeman “help her” into a police car. The trust officer said they’d checked her into a hotel around the corner - the woman was from a prominent local family and had a very large trust fund. One of the things the trust paid the bank to do was see that her physical welfare was taken care of when it got very cold outside. She refused all other help and there was no way to commit her involuntarily.
I don’t have an answer for the diehard nutjobs who have lost all contact with reality; I do know that freely dispensing powerful drugs to those who haven’t been helped by all other means is just wrong.
That's good enough to repeat, with a BTT.
Guns don’t kill, people that have been taking anti-depressants do.
When are we going to demand some responsibility from the people and corporations that are drugging our citizens and then walking away with the money in the bank and the lead flying.
This is insane. Every single school shooting has the same background.
I saw the changes in my brother when he got on the right meds. Even my headinthesand, thinkhappythoughts mom even admitted that meds were a good thing!
DUH! That was after years of my Dad thinking if he just hit him enough, he’d get ‘over’ it.
So I see the other side-— people who put kids through hell and see meds as evil.
The future is here already. Here is an excerpt from an article written exactly one year ago.
"In Aug., 2003, the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) announced the results of their $1.2 million tax-payer funded study. It stated, essentially, that traditionalists are mentally disturbed. Scholars from the Universities of Maryland, California at Berkeley, and Stanford had determined that social conservatives...suffer from mental rigidity,' dogmatism,' and uncertainty avoidance,' together with associated indicators for mental illness." http://www.edwatch.org/ Social and Emotional Learning" Jan. 26, 2005)
Thanks for posting this: The “Western world”- and specificially Britain, The US and Canada are looking more, and more like the Soviet Union every day..@! Unfortunately.../
Animal House -— Bluto: “What? Off their meds? Were the Germans off their meds when they bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!”
Well, sorta like Bluto would say!
When are we going to demand some responsibility from the people and corporations that are drugging our citizens and then walking away with the money in the bank and the lead flying.
This is insane. Every single school shooting has the same background.
You are absolutely RIGHT!
These chemicals alter your mind and mess you up.
Some people don’t need meds to be evil.
Meds just help you along ... .
MORE PILLS!
You’re just a walking dollar bill to these doctors.
(Multiple that $ a few times ...)
Whether or not we feel this way or that way about why this event has happen is irrelevent. Humanity is so quick to judge an event before they understand it fully. This forum is attacking liberals, the right to the second amendment, antidepressants, etc. for the sole purpose of defending thier emotional opinions based of thier individual life experiences.
Out of all of this, there is a much larger problem that must be addressed before anything and it is not from the actions of the shooter. On the contrary, it is the action of every individual there. How many there risked their lives trying to stop this man? Then ask yourselves how many of those fled, hid or simply laid in the fetal position while ONE person threatend all the whole stood for? I’m not trying to justify the shooters actions, only trying to make people understand that independent thought, released from fear, of just one, could have stopped this.
To pass judgment on an event, try to point the finger at a single cause and then seek to enforce that opinion to others is self defeating. This was our own individual faults and no one elses. If we want to stop things like this we need to teach our children and selves how to THINK FOR THEMSELVES without worrying about what others are doing. When people can do this there won’t be problems like this because they won’t have an attacker to defend their beliefs against, but instead only see a line of thought that works without condition.
The freedom from the people’s influence, is the awnser to people’s peace.
Watch out for University Health Services passing out free anti-depressants along with their liberal anti-parent tripe while hiding behind HIPAA laws.
