ABC News' George Stephanopoulos and John Berman Report: Former Gov. Mitt Romney, R-Mass., today endorsed his former Republican rival Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. The endorsement took place this afternoon at Romney for President headquarters in Boston.
Romney asked his delegates to throw their support to McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.
"Even when the contest was close and our disagreements were debated, the caliber of the man was apparent," Romney said, standing with McCain for the announcement at his now-defunct campaign's headquarters in Boston. "As a party, we come together."
Accepting Romney's endorsement, McCain said despite a "hard campaign" now "we move forward together for the good of our party and the nation."
Once bitter rivals locked in an acrimonious Republican nomination fight, Romney abandoned his 2008 bid following a poor showing in the Super Tuesday contests this month. Romney had won the support of many in the conservative wing of the party, but failed to overtake McCain in either delegates or the number of state wins.
The former governor made his decision to endorse today in the interest of helping McCain gain the 1,191 delegates he needs to secure the party nomination and unite the party for the general election against the Democrats in November.
Romney campaign manager Beth Myers notified McCain campaign manager Rick Davis in a telephone call today of Romney's decision, and they immediately made arrangements for an announcement in Boston this afternoon since McCain was campaigning in Rhode Island today.
After McCain's townhall meeting near Providence this afternoon, the campaign is flying to Boston for the endorsement.
Romney and McCain will meet today before they both announce the formal endorsement at a press conference.
I understand.
“Down” was not the word I was looking for. Trying to type fast at work.
Does that mean that rising tide will campaign for the best man during the primary season this summer and then join ranks with other partisans in September to campaign for president?
Or does that mean that rising tide will abandon the partisan cape and try living by principles?
Does that mean that when the king hasn't any clothing, rising tide will raise the alarm?
Does that mean that rising tide will vote for the qualified candidate that best meets conservative standards, even though that candidate may not have been anointed by the partisan apparatus?
DJ....you may appreciate this song, better than some others, methinks. : )
Romney VP announcement coming soon?
Reagan's threshold was 75%.
Further, there is a huge difference between 1976 and 2008 -- we are at war:
"Even though we face an uphill fight, I know that many in this room are fully behind my campaign. You are with me all the way to the convention. Fight on, just like Ronald Reagan did in 1976. But there is an important difference from 1976: today, we are a nation at war.
"And Barack and Hillary have made their intentions clear regarding Iraq and the war on terror. They would retreat and declare defeat. And the consequence of that would be devastating. It would mean attacks on America, launched from safe havens that make Afghanistan under the Taliban look like child's play. About this, I have no doubt.
"I disagree with Senator McCain on a number of issues, as you know. But I agree with him on doing whatever it takes to be successful in Iraq, on finding and executing Osama bin Laden, and on eliminating Al Qaeda and terror. If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror. ~~ Mitt Romney, CPAC speech, February 7, 2008
Well I never depised him. He’s a great man. On many issues he’s conservative. On some he’s a RINO. I can live with that compared to many other politicians we suffer through including George W. Bush who was somewhat of a disappointment.
Haven’t checked latest delegate count but last one I saw STILL showed Romney ahead of Bubba Huck. So Romney has had good support within the Republican Party including from conservatives.
But you’re right some despise him. So be it. To each his own.
Both Bushs, Mitt Romney, Reagan (35 years ago), even TR all fit the bill of what you are saying.
Pray-tell. What exactly does a future with McCain as POTUS hold? Please explain how he would be WORSE for our country than the current overall frontrunner- Obama.
I might be able to appreciate your concern for his politics if it wasn’t obvious you were more concerned about the name of “Republican” than you were about the good of our Country.
After watching that press conference today, I’m beginning to think so. McCain looked pissed off (as usual) and Romney looked like that cat that had swallowed the canary.
TRAITOR!!!!:)
Huh?
And McCain is practically begging to kick Ahamanutjob in the teeth!
That doesn’t exactly answer my question.
So did Fred Thompson.
Too bad. A opportunity squandered. Either Democrat opponent has fatal flaws which will only allow their election if McCain is the Republican candidate. Any other high profile, traditional Republican with common sensibilities could win in September.
I’m going to assume that was to “Both Bushs, Mitt Romney, Reagan (35 years ago), even TR all fit the bill of what you are saying.”
Is the answer to your eloquent question.
Moderation in the defeat of Liberalism is a vice, Exremeism in the pursuit of Victory is a virtue...
Your posts make no sense.
Do tell, why did Election 2006 flop then?
