House Democrats are crafting a scaled-down immigration reform measure despite the political minefields that surround the issue, the Roll Call newspaper reported Monday. It says that Hispanic members including Rep. Joe Baca are seeking five-year visas for illegal immigrants who pay fines and pass criminal background checks. Baca, a California Democrat chairs the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
Baca said the prospects for a compromise package were discussed in high-level meetings that included Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Democratic Caucus Chairman Rahm Emanuel, and Rep. Zoe Lofgren, who chairs a key immigration subcommittee, Roll Call said.
The paper added: Its unclear if the behind-the-scenes discussions will actually result in a bill coming to the floor, but Democrats say drafts of legislation already have been written and are being vetted behind the scenes....

Show me some other type of reform and I will opine on it then.
A bill for congressional reform would better serve the country.
Does anyone doubt that Bush or Hillary or McCain or Obama will sign this the minute that it hits the desk?

If those Visas don’t provide some sort of normalized status after the 5 years and IF they must return to Mexico after the 5 years without right to return except through ordinary immigration AND IF the fence is built, criminal illegals are ALWAYS deported, and employers of illegals without work visas are consistently sought out and fined . . . then maybe . . . I’ll wait for analysis by the conservative groups.
What minefields? All 3 major presidential candidates (4 if you include Huckabee) support shamnesty. I am surprised that a broader form of shamnesty that would grant US citizenship to anyone on this planet hasn't been proposed.
Here we go...
I was thinking more like “Mexico is south of here. South is that way. Get walking on the path to Mexico, and don’t come back.”
Ping.
The only path that should be allowed for illegals:

I think that was basically the path for the germanic tribes in Rome. They took over in the end and that was the end of the road for Rome, and particularly for the Republican traditions of Rome.
No way. Military service is much more important than that. We don’t need law breakers as mercenaries to gain legal status. What kind of message does that send?
Now you've done it! You let the cat out of the bag.................
Don't confuse reform with enforcement. The illegals problem is entirely the fault of the President and his lack of enforcement of the existing laws governing labor, immigration and border control.
We could retain our existing laws and not have a problem with illegal aliens of the magnitude we have now if the existing laws at the federal level are enforced.
Does current law "fast track" citizenship for foreigners who legally immigrate if said people serve in the military? I don't have a problem with that at all.
We should deport all those congreesman who bring this bs up again.
They need to get out and get in line.
They are screwing people over who are trying to do it the right way.
I don’t either. These are green card holders, i.e., legal permanet residents. There are about 30,000 now in the the military. Yes, their citizenship applications are expedited.
