The McCain Mutiny
IBD ^ | February 11, 2008

Posted on 02/11/2008 5:48:13 PM PST by Kaslin

Republicans: George Bush insists John McCain is a true conservative. James Dobson says he's not. Meanwhile, Newsweek predicts "there will be blood" in the GOP. We predict a Republican president. There has to be.

McCain wasn't our first choice, but in the field that remains, he's the best choice. It would be disastrous for America if those conservative purists who'd make the perfect the enemy of the good let America go down a path from which it might not recover.

President Bush, speaking on "Fox News Sunday," responded "absolutely" to host Chris Wallace's question of whether John McCain was a "true conservative." McCain is "very strong on national defense," is "tough fiscally," "believes the tax cuts ought to be permanent" and is "pro-life," Bush noted.

For Obama and Hillary, none of the above apply.

Bush did say, "I think that if John is the nominee, he has got some convincing to do to convince people that he is a solid conservative." Indeed he does, as evidenced by Mike Huckabee's win in the Nebraska caucuses over the weekend.

McCain has done well in primaries where independents could vote for him. In caucuses dominated by party activists, he's done poorly. The caucuses of Maine, Minnesota, Alaska, Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, Nevada and Wyoming were all won by Romney. One might dub McCain the "rebel without a caucus."

Ann Coulter may vote for Hillary Clinton, but we will not. The time for Coulters and the true believers to have rallied behind Mitt Romney was before Super Tuesday. It is by waiting for the next Reagan that they've risked sticking us with the next Clinton.

IBD gets it. Now if conservatives would just stop, take a deep breath and think things through, to the net result of their actions.

We've done that.

McAmnesty guarantees the long-term destruction of the Conservative Wing of the GOP. And by conservative I mean all four branches: Fiscal, Social, Defense, and a fourth which doesn't normally get mentioned because usually it is included in defense or security, Immigration.

He will run to the center and we will get moderate SCOTUS judges and Amnesty and he will sign whatever Global Warming bill the dems put on his desk and he will also sign any Embryonic Stem Cell research bill they put on his desk.

This will further alienate the conservatives and gaurantee either a long term minority status of several decades or cause the party to go the way of the Whigs.

With a Dem President, we have short-term pain, it will stiffen the spine of the current GOP member in Congress and will provide for victory at the Presidential level in 2012 and quite possibly a turn around in one or both houses in 2021 as well.

Rewarding the Liberals in the party for behaving has they have behaved only guarantees more of the same crappy behavior.

I for one will not reward their bad behavior or give them that power.

I will work to elect downstream CONSERVATIVE candidates in all down-stream races.

But McAmnesty will never get my vote.

I've been wondering how long it would take before I saw this headline.

I’m talking about the man and making a point that we had better candidates that were snubbed. Now we are supposed to get in line for who the GOP wants? Why even waste our time? Don’t even have a primary.

This seems to be a pretty good editorial. John McCain will be getting my vote in November. He may not be perfect but he’s certainly right on many, if not most, conservative issues.

Absolutely spot on. We all have problems with McCain. However

See #28 for why you are SO WRONG!

Amnesty renders any vote for president pretty much useless for a Republican. Amnesty will ad many millions of new Democrats to the system and relegate Republicans to being a quaint local phenomenon having no relevance to national politics. Why any Republican would desire such an outcome is totally beyond me. Trying to find motives for it leads to absurd conspiracy theories.

So what are you planning to do? Sit the election out in November, or just not vote for president?

I’ll vote 3rd party candidate for President. Why do we “have” to win? McCain would be a horrible president.

I haven’t heard that Rush has said he won’t vote for McCain. Did I miss it?

I’m with you. Today.

A lot can happen in the next nine months to change both our minds.

I can’t support McCain unless he withdraws his McCain-Lieberman global warming bill.

We are in a knock down drag out fight with the liberals in our county over private property rights and water rights. I would lose all credibility if I supported McCain.

We don’t feel like we can trust McCain on anything but the terrorism issue. He has no economic credentials and you just can’t trust his conservative credentials on judges, taxes, social issues, global warming, immigration, etc.....

If he truly is a fiscal conservative that would be a start. I’d love to see him veto any legislation containing earmarks.

That said, we certainly know Hil/Obama aren’t with us on ANY of these issues. I’ll vote for McCain but I’m praying for a miracle at the convention!

The Republican Party needs to put up Republican candidates if they expect Republicans to vote for Republican nominees.

John McCain is NOT going to get my vote! I am done watering down the Republican Party with RINO's.

We will lose if we don’t unite.

I'm united. I don't like McCain, so I won't vote for him. I'm going to vote in the Ohio primary for Obama, against Hillary. When Obama becomes POTUS, conservatives will have four years to gain control from the RINOS. Join us, unite!

I agree with all of that. But we screwed ourselves. Yea, Thompson is a great conservative. But when it became obvious that he could not get even the slightest traction, and didn't appear to even want to, we had the chance to unite around a far more acceptable than McCain.
