If you have not, buy Jonah Goldberg’s”Liberal Fascism.” A little over the top (Woodrow Wilson a “fascist,” Not IMHO. But the main thesis is: modern liberals tend to the totalitarianism of Mussolini and Lenin. The difference between the two was Mussolini’s nationalism; Lenin was an internationalist.
Each was bloody-minded.

Communism, Fascism, they are both totalitarianism. I have spoken to many older people who lived through both in Europe. They preferred Fascism, as they were still allowed to run their businesses. They could not with Communism. That said, they still hated both systems.

This explains why leftists tend toward centralized authoritarian constructs.
