Right wants Romney as standard-bearer
The Washington Times ^ | 02092008 | Ralph Z. Hallow

Some 50 stalwarts of the political right privately met with Mitt Romney minutes after he dropped out of the Republican nominating race to discuss the former Massachusetts governor becoming the face of conservatism, as Ronald Reagan became en route to his 1980 election win.

if you can be fooled by a rino that talks conservative all the sudden, then that is your problem.

Don't fool yourself, a closed mind is a dead mind. Had you looked at the character of the man you would find that his conversion to Constitutional conservative was foremost in his mind. You were stuck on his past and never took the time to realize that any flip-flop he explained when he was wrong. That is the same way Regan was. Look where you and your kind have put us now. This great man was stuck in a State the was far left, and any compromise he made was for the good of the public even if it was not perfect. Closed minds are dangerous. If you had told the whole truth I would have respected you more, but snippets don't get it.

Approval Rating for Congress = 22%.

An experienced corporate executive, former governor and self made multi-millionaire like Romney isn't good enough for the republican party to run as their candidate for president.

Let's get some more incompetent, whining RINO Senators to run instead.

"if you can be fooled by a rino that talks conservative all the sudden, then that is your problem."

Pissant, you've got no room to talk about being fooled.

You got bamboozled by Hunter, just like I did. That BS artist came away with $1200 of my money, but never will he get another penny. It's time to admit that Hunter and Thompson were the biggest phonies of the campaign. Did you get his Hunter 52 email yesterday? Backed out but still begging for money; whatta guy!

Romney, on the other hand, has been very honest with us, even when it wasn't going to make him look good. He is the only candidate in this campaign besides Ron Paul, with the moral character needed from a president. All the others failed; even Tancredo.

(Romney's) resignation speech was quite inspiring...I still have hope...

Coulter, Limbaugh, Weyrich, Hannity, Dobson, Tancredo, and all the other rock-solid conservatives who were impressed with Romney were not simply having hallucinations.

Romney IS a very conservative, straight-laced morals-based man.... especially in his private family life and business dealings.

His troubles in 2008 were due to his verbal efforts in 1994 (and a little in 2002) to convince Massachusetts voters that he was not this intolerant white-males-only type of person that many associate with Mormons.

In other words, he made a few pandering statements during a campaign debate (vs Kennedy) in hopes of convincing women voters that he didn't want to keep them 'barefoot and pregnant' .......

He also tried to tell voters that he didn't want to make homosexuality illegal ....and that he was a nice tolerant man.

In 2008, some conservatives are so adamant in their opposition to homosexuality and abortion that they would never in a zillion years consider making such pandering statements.

Romney is a more cerebral type of conservative.... and feels the need to express the fact that he does not hate those who are different.

THAT is why some conservatives hate Romney so bad now.

As for myself, I agree wholeheartedly with Ann Coulter who proclaimed Romney to be a solid conservative... even though she also admitted he made some dumb statements in the past.

But that's just what they were, Coulter said --- 'statements.'

When you analyze his entire record of governance, Coulter added, Romney was quite conservative.

"There are far better candidates than Willard that didn't run."

First, I don't believe that. There certainly is no other candidate, or potential candidate that comes close to his cognitive ability.

Second, those that didn't run probably didn't because of the skeletons in their closets (and this was likely Thompson's problem too)

Mitt Romney’s isn’t a conservative. He just plays one in his TV commercials. He was a flaming LIBERAL as governor of Massachusetts. That is his record. Everything else is just rhetoric and campaign talk.

His pandering is what sealed the deal for me. He promised billions to bailout Detroit while campaigning in Michigan. At least McCain was honest and took the unpopular path and told them that many jobs would NEVER return. Then he promised to provide federal hurricane insurance to all Floridians. At least he only promised $20 billion or so to Detroit. If Florida had another year, like say 2004, the costs to cover the entire state to the federal government could be hundreds of billions or even a trillion dollars. Again, McCain said he was opposed and took the unpopular position.

I hate politicians who will say anything to anybody in order to curry favor. It’s what Democrats do.

The whole truth is that he is pandering lib. Mitt “say anything”. It wasn’t like his governorship was 20 years ago. It ended in 05. He also lied through his teeth, constantly.

I didn’t like him at first (thought he was a phony), but the more I read about him and his record the more I like him.

I can identify with that. I actually at one time had him ranked below Huckabee, which seems laughable now, but that was when I was a Fred-head and hadn't looked much at their records and qualifications. Turns out Huckabee is the phony and Mitt has a lot going for him. I would love to see him get the VP slot.

“Romney, I truly believe, made pandering statements during that 1994 debate just to convince the Massachusetts voters that he wasn’t this uber-white male who only accepts other uber-white Judeo-Christian males.”

What was he like before that debate? Well he switched his registration to Republican a few months before the debate and he voted for Paul Tsongas in 92.

Here is the kicker, this is where his political donations were going before that debate where you said that he was only pandering.

“Willard Mitt Romney donated $250 in 1992 to then-U.S. Rep. Dick Swett’s (D New Hampshire) successful re-election campaign. The one-term congressman served another term before losing to Republican Charles Bass in 1994. Two years later, Swett ran unsuccessfully against Republican Bob Smith for one of the Granite State’s U.S. Senate seats.

In 1992, the former Massachusetts governor and current Republican presidential contender , also donated $250 to Rep. John J. La Falce (D New York) and $1,000 to Douglas Delano Anderson, an unsuccessful Democratic primary candidate for the U.S. Senate seat held by Utah Republican Jake Garn, who retired that year.

So, between July 1989 and October 1993, Romney exclusively financed these three Democrats.”

Bullsh*t. Hunter never made one false claim, never had any flip flops, never pandered.

Hunter’s biggest lie was that he was running for president. Yesterday’s email proves that.

Conservatives work hard to convert people to the conservative view.

Then, when someone converts or becomes a stronger conservative other conservatives castigate them, call them names and refuse to accept them.

Why?

Is ideological purity at birth an absolute requirement?

Romney says he has become a more solid conservative over the years and is booed.

McCain says he left most of his leftist ways behind and became a better conservative after Super Tuesday when he realized he needed our votes and some conservatives are converted to McCainites after one speech.

Haley Barbour. Bobby Jindal. Rick Santorum. Jeff Sessions. We have a long way to go before we have to settle for liberal Mitt.

Romney would have gone NOWHERE without his money. Absolutely nowhere. He outspent everybody combined on the GOP side and still couldn’t win. He was not a heavyweight candidate. He benefited from the weak GOP field as much as McCain or Huckabee. None of them are top-tier candidates, in my opinion.

I thought Jeb Bush should have run in 2008. Too bad his brother messed things up so badly as to make it almost impossible for that to happen. The idea of Fred Thompson sounded better than the actual thing. I still respect the record that Fred put together in the Senate, though. He just didn’t catch fire at all. Frist was taken out long ago. There really aren’t any other heavyweights that I could think of as possibilities.

Your opinions sound like “sharing time” in the second grade.

Jeb Bush is a real pandering globalist liberal. He scuttled his chances at the presidency when his spine melted during the Terri Schiavo murder.
