Thompson and McCain were joined at the hip in the Senate, and Fred carried the water for McCain-Feingold more than any other single individual. Both Feingold and McCain’s chief of staff publicly credited Thompson with being the prime mover of the bill through the Congress.

Fred Thompson has every right to endorse anyone he pleases for POTUS. Thompson and McCain have been friends for years and that was never a secret.
