Fred Thompson, the one-time Republican presidential candidate, endorsed Sen. John McCain Friday, calling on the party to "close ranks" behind the presumed nominee

Republican party in this election cycle: Ship sinking, water coming in faster than I can bail.. time to abandon ship and look for another.
Actually believe it or not, alot of his votes are coming from the military and their families. They seem to like and trust McCain. Maybe that should tell us something.
The wild sentiments on this thread are amazing.
Fred is a REPUBLICAN. He isn’t going to sit out the election.
There are others who will sit out the election, which is their perfect right to do, but if you will please notice many, many of them have disavowed being a Republican. Many have said they either don’t care if Hillary or Obama win, and some even say they would rather one of them win than McCain.
Not passing a value judgement here...just sayin’ the truth. Fred needs no other reason than because he sees himself as a Republican and doesn’t want either Hillary or Obama in the WH.
He has disavowed the CFR bill in it’s final form and clearly views it as a mistake. He has pointed out where he differs from McCain. On a sizable number of issues. I believe he sees himself and McCain more and more divergent as time goes on. I believe he thought he was a better potential President than McCain.
I’m not going to get into the “fire in the belly” question. Those of you who think his run was all a ploy will always choose to think his approach was part of a game to help McCain.
From what I’ve learned about Fred, Fred was being Fred.
CFR comes before God, country or party... you know that.
Not this one. What he said was: "This is no longer about past preferences or differences. It is about what is best for our country and for me that means that Republican should close ranks behind John McCain,"
That's as weak an endorsement as I've heard in a long time. It doesn't endorse McCain's nomination as much as it attempts to put differences aside and bring the party together.
That's something I can understand although I won't be going along with it.
“Oh well, McCain wont win anyway.”
That’s what I’m banking on.
No, he didn’t endorse anybody. But I seriously look for him to get behind the nominee. He talked yesterday about the dangers of indulging in a fit of self pity and not voting; about what it did to us in 06.
“FR is infested with whacko extremists. This campaign has been a real revelation.”
“I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue.
Barry Goldwater, acceptance speech as Republican candidate for President, 1963
“and for me that means that Republican should close ranks behind John McCain,”....
Hate to say it but it certainly sounds like an endorsement to me, to my dismay.
“That’s something I can understand although I won’t be going along with it.”
Ditto!
I don’t know what RIB stands for in your tagline, but speaking to the rest of your tagline, I’ll not be among those trying to persuade you to vote for anyone or even to vote at all. Why? Because I don’t happen to care what you do.
This IS about the future. If we can hold on for the next 4 years, we have a chance. Give it up to the dems and we won’t have the chance again. Stop being so pessimistic. The sun is going to shine again. McCain may be a pain in the butt but hes what we’ve been given. When handed lemons, make lemonade.
That may be so, but I cannot vote for McStain after he stacked the audience for his speech at CPAC.
Those words belong with those that precede them: "It is about what is best for our country.."
I never said it wasn't an endorsement; just a weak one. And he's saying we should get behind McCain for the good of the country; i.e. he's saying McCain would be better than a Democrat. Again, that's a very weak endorsement.
I have no intention of following. But all this dumping on Thompson is sour grapes and ridiculous. We should be better than such petty displays of childishness.
Everyone is crying the blues. No one is debating what should be done next. When someone wants to take part in meaningful discussion I'll be happy to oblige. But this stuff is a waste of time.
Could you please post a link for that statement? This week a soldier called TGO from Iraq to let us know he and a lot of his military brothers DO NOT like mclame NOR do they trust him.
Mclames record?...

Fred said a long time ago he would support the party nominee regardless. No surprise there.
But notice Fred didn’t endorse until the smoke had cleared and we got our loser ... Bob Dole II in a sombrero without the inspiration, energy, vision and charisma of the original. I also note that Fred “was too old” for many at 64, but ...
From there, I work for House and Senate candidates, my list of potential out of state adoptees is growing as I do more research. My own Rep is a passable conservative, could be better but we need to improve the breed nationwide, not reduce the count.
Not going to waste any time or money on the Presidential race, all my effort will go towards the House and Senate. Rush made the case, read up if you want to know the details.
Like we did in 06. So hows that working out for you, then? In 06 we didn’t like our Repub candidate for Senator but we got behind him, went to the polls and voted and I think we were one of the very few states to send a Republican to Washington and it sure has helped the whole country when he voted against amnesty, etc. I wish people would take the whole country into consideration before they throw their selfish little fits and not vote.
Love it! LOL
Not even for you Fred.
Now I'm gonna go off and fill up my cuss jar.
Same here, and no fire in the belly.
Regardless, nobody tells me to close ranks.
McCain/Feingold
McCain/Lieberman
McCain/Kennedy would all make exceptional VP mates for him.
