Fred Thompson, the one-time Republican presidential candidate, endorsed Sen. John McCain Friday, calling on the party to "close ranks" behind the presumed nominee

Don't forget you widdle marbles
.....Concluding the the second worst week in Conservative politcal history, besides Augsut 1974 (my sample size is 35 years)
I never thought I would see this much quit on Free Republic!
I know this is disappointing - Fred was my guy, too - but come on! Cowboy up, folks, and don’t just give it away to the Clintons again. My God.
You address a post to me, tell me to grow up, I take that as an insult.
I have been reading all your posts on this thread and you are certainly rude.
Frankly, you are an asshole.
I don't know that he "wants" the spot, but he would be a shrewd choice for the job. I would find that ticket very tempting.
I’m not down on Fred over this. It was expected and is the normal course of party politics.
"This is no longer about past preferences or differences. It is about what is best for our country and for me that means that Republican should close ranks behind John McCain," Thompson said in a statement reported by the Associated Press.
HE IS SAYING EXACTLY WHAT ROMNEY SAID THE OTHER DAY WHEN HE STEPPED DOWN TO HELP THE GOP UNITE BEHIND A CANDIDATE QUICKLY IN ORDER TO DEFEAT THE DEMS. This is NOT an endorsement.
Thank you for your brief, sane post. Not sure if your logic can cut through the hysteria, but it’s welcome.
I didn’t mean to excuse anything. I was trying to say that I can ignore the rudeness (when I’m in a benevolent mood) and try to concentrate on interesting and reasonable posts (such as yours, thank you).
As a guilty pleasure I sometimes just watch some of the nastier conversations for fun. Yes, I know I get my enjoyment from the wrong places sometimes. :D
I guess my point is that anywhere you go where you have large numbers of anonymous folks talking, there are going to be jerks (yes, and sometimes I can be a jerk too), especially when it comes to a hot-button thing like politics. Overall, I think it’s worth it here, but that’s me. Personally, I hope you stick around. If all the nice people leave...well, you get the idea. :D
*We* are not the children in this scenario — it’s the GOP that has been acting like a wayward child by continuing to push poor candidates. If you want to get a wayward child back in line, you can’t just keep making empty threats but then giving in to whatever the kid wants to do. There have to be consequences.
I understand the “lesser of two evils in cataclysmic times” argument, and I’m not going to flame anyone for going that direction.
I also understand the argument that in cataclysmic times, we absolutely must have a bona fide conservative choice...and the fastest way to get to a truly conservative president who will turn our Republic back in the right direction is to force the issue with the Republican party. Forcing the issue means withholding the best bit of leverage we have: votes.
The folks who believe in the latter approach are not taking that path out of petulance — they’re doing what they believe is the best thing for our country.
“I would find that ticket very tempting.”
I would consider it.
FOTFLMHO
How sweet it is!
And let’s repeat.....HUCKABEE WILL NOT GET THE NOMINATION. He is so far behind in the delegate count that unless McCain dies or starts using the N-word, there is no way he can win.
Not a chance in hell.
McCain IS our NOMINEE. It sucks, but deal with it.
Thank you, I will.
I have family in Iraq and Afghanistan. I don't want to see them stabbed in the back from the WH.
Everyone liked Hunter (most everyone). They just wanted to fulfill a self fulfilling prophecy.
You do realize that it is voters who pick the candidates, not the party?
The GOP hasn’t done a damn thing to hurt you. It is the GOP VOTERS who picked McCain, mainly old geezers because young people stayed home.
Grow up.
I don’t feel ANYONE except Hunter or Thompson had much of any conservative record. I’ll vote McCain and plug my nostrils the whole time. What a choice.
Dark, I just about want to slit my wrists with some of the morons on this thread.
Phoney phoney woo hoo LOLMHO
I knew it, I knew it, I knew it all the time!:)
That Gut feeling was right!
You’re right.
