There is NOTHING conservative about working with the Democratic nominee against most of your fellow conservatives in order to grow government, socialize medicine, lose the war in Iraq, tilt the Supreme Court to the Left, and make Roe v. Wade the permanent law of the land. If you are conservative and vote for the Democratic nominee or even just refuse to vote for McCain, who is by any and every objective standard, considerably more conservative than either of them, let me tell you what you are NOT doing,
* You are NOT doing the logical thing. When faced with a choice between a moderate who holds some conservative positions and some non-conservative positions and a liberal who holds no conservative positions, the logical decision is to take the moderate. After all, half a loaf is better than none.
* You are NOT helping conservatism or your fellow conservatives. To the contrary, you are helping liberals defeat conservative ideas. Isn't that what conservatives are saying that they're furious at McCain over? Well, who's less of a conservative: John McCain, who, if he were in the White House, would help conservatives win some battles and would help liberals win others or the conservatives who want to help a Democrat get into the office who will go against conservative ideas every time?
* You are NOT looking out for the best interests of the country. If you believe winning in Iraq is better than losing, if you believe balancing the budget is better than higher deficit spending, if you believe that having a Supreme Court that is tilted to the right is better than having a Supreme Court tilted to the left, and if you believe that Roe v. Wade is leading to the immoral murder of millions of children -- and the overwhelming majority of people reading this column certainly believe all those things -- then you are certainly not putting the good of the country first if you oppose John McCain in November.
Keyes’ prior vote tallies were without benefit of the persuasive powers of you and millions who may feel as strongly about the USA and liberty as you and I. Can you probably persuade one person a day between now and the convention about which candidate best represents you? And who is that candidate? For me, it’s Keyes, and I’m willing to discuss with as many potential voters as I can about what’s at stake and what’s so refreshing about Keyes.
Do you remember the Bible story about the public “vote” on which prisoner — Barabbas and Jesus were the only “candidates” I recall — to release? Barabbas got the most votes that day. Does that track record mean you’d stick with Barabbas or someone just like him in your own future votes? Not me!
If the presidency had absolute power, this would be correct.
However, we need to focus on winning Congress. IF we can hold Congress where it is today, then McCain losing won’t do much harm...but it will greatly increase the influence of Republicans in Congress.
Holding or winning Congress, combined with Hillary or Obama to fight against, will give us the best overall deal left possible.
Yes, it is. I just went back and counted them.
.
It’s gettin’ outta control!

It’s got more energy than the “Energizer Bunny”!

Of course, had Jesus been freed by the crowd, he would not have suffered and died for our sins and therefore would not be our Saviour so your analogy is ridiculous, from a theological perspective.
exactly...does the country shift quickly to the left with obama/klintoon or does the country shift to the left slowly with McCain. At what point do we object to any shift to the left as wrong? I thought this was FreeRepublic.com not FreeGOPModerates.com?
Well, I am happy to acknowledge the truth of your point. But I wasn’t urging folks to change the past. I’m urging one and all to ask if there’s a candidate who represents their views on virtually every issue that’s dear to them. And if Alan Keyes is that candidate, and if they think this election is important, I’m urging folks, including you, to talk to others about the issues and Keyes. If enough voters agree, he’ll win this nomination yet.
Here’s a thoroughly theological comment in which I take great comfort: With God, all is possible.
“If enough voters agree, hell win this nomination yet”
That is a lovely fantasy, but I think you need to prepare yourself for the harsh reality that is a McCain candidacy. The ‘enough voters’ that you speak of is in the millions. It’s just not going to happen.
Please. We Conservatives aren't asking for a "perfect" conservative. We are asking for a principled, demonstrable Conservative. NOTHING McLame has done in he last 10+ years has been conservative in the least.
So, tell the truth, are you part of the "Conservative" Media Consultants that McLame hired? Are we going to continue seeing crap like this posted all over the forums in an effort to "shame us to mclame?" (D**M, That might make a GREAT t-shirt...)
McCain’s about halfway to the nomination. It is very clear that there’s a lot of folks who have seen enough of McCain’s political behavior over the years to conclude that he does not come close to representing their views on many issues near and dear to them. I’m happy to talk to folks about some of the very significant differences between McCain and Keyes. I don’t know if my efforts, or potentially yours, if you share my opinion of Keyes on the issues, could make a difference. But I do know that if you don’t vote for the person who best represents your position, why should you expect your values to ever be represented toany substantial degree? I appreciate your comments here, and hope you didn’t discourage your loved ones from rooting for the New York football Giants in the recent Super Bowl just because they looked like prohibitive favorites.
“Nice try to get out of answering the question.”
I think my post answered the question perfectly.
Nice try on your part, though, to dodge responsibility to hold your party accountable. I am sure the party knows that no matter their actions you will hand over your vote. It is a given and they need not earn it.
Ask the Republican Party. They palmed John Mc Cain off on us.
Answer me this, if you will.
If John Mc Cain is so tough on the “War on Terror” why did he vote against the wire tapping law? Why does he want to close GitMo? Why does he want to give international outlaws the protections of the U.S. Constitution?
I know that it may come as a surprise to you but these outlaws have killed some of the Servicemen/women that you say John Mc Cain will so fiercely defend.
He has already turned his back on the MIA/POWs so what proof ,other than his word, that he will support the Servicemen/women?
And last but not least, he has already endorsed Hillary.
With his own mouth and in his own words he said she will make a great President.
As far as I am concerned, the election between Mc Cain and whoever The Democrat is is a family fight.
Mc Cain has spent more time in bed with the Democrats than he has spent with his wife.
When is he for fighting the WOT?
One cannot tell by his voting record.
Tell that to the Republican Party. They are who pusheMc Cain on us.
Yep....2008 is about who will head our brave, new single party system.
America, you were beautiful while you lasted. Thanks for the memories.
You raise some very good points about the ‘likeability’ factor for a candidate.
Don’t you dare put words in the mouths of military folk. I *AM* in the USAF and really don’t take kindly to civilians telling me what I think.
And by the way, if you don’t like the Democraptastic party offerings, there is more than just one alternative.
Just in case you’ve never actually seen an election ballet, there will most likely be Libertarian and a Constitution Party candidates for president.
Either would get you a more conservative, pro-military candidate than... John McCommunist.
