BREAKING: Romney to endorse McCain tonight?
politicker md ^ | 2-7-08 | Editor

The Dewey Loman American Legion Post 109 is the place to be tonight for Maryland Republicans.

That’s where presidential candidate Sen. John McCain and ex-presidential candidate Mitt Romney are both scheduled to speak this evening in Halethorpe Maryland.

Romney was previously scheduled to attend the event, while McCain announced his surprise appearance this morning.

And just minutes ago, McCain’s campaign put out word that the Arizona senator would be picking up “a major endorsement” at this evening’s Baltimore County Republican Lincoln Day Dinner.

Minutes later, former Massachusetts Gov. Romney announced he would be ending his bid for the White House.

One source with knowledge of tonight’s event tells PolitickerMD.com that former Gov. Bob Ehrlich will not be the one introducing McCain before the presidential candidate delivers brief remarks; however, Ehrlich aides say he will be announcing his endorsement this evening.

But does an Ehrlich endorsement qualify for a national teaser endorsement at this stage of McCain's campaign? We think not.

There are implications that Romney, who has been locked in a bitter fight with McCain, would make the quick endorsement with the hope of unifying their party.

According to an advance text of his speech to the 2008 CPAC conference obtained by Time’s Mark Halperin, Romney said, “I disagree with Senator McCain on a number of issues, as you know.”

“But I agree with him on doing whatever it takes to be successful in Iraq, on finding and executing Osama bin Laden, and on eliminating Al Qaeda and terror. If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win.”

Get a grip...it’s a freaking rumor. Since he has only suspended his campaign, he is not giving those delegates away, which means it is more likely he will not endorse either candidate that is left.

I don’t approve of two-faced behavior, silly me.

BTW, what part of your conservatism is moderate?

We were spoon fed this idiot by the MEDIA!

It is still America but a dumbed down one. The MSM media is the real satan! They really believe they can make or break a presidency. They need to be taught otherwise!!!!
The leftists scream louder than we do - we’ve got to change that. Lock and load I say!

Yes. If Romney endorses McCain, I’ll consider it a sellout.

Wrong.
I wouldn't be allowing it.

Obama or Hillary is responsible for their actions. They will be responsible. And so will the GOP leadership be responsible.

Don't get confused by the mass spooking of the public.

I'M NOT BUYING IT!!!

Just heard from a campaign insider that Romney isn’t going to be at the event tonight.

Holding out for a VP slot maybe?

At the risk of repeating myself:
Staying home on election day won't send a message to Republican leaders. Neither will voting for McCain. Well, a McCain vote will send the message that conservatives are not principled but party voters; and therefore the Republican leadership can continue to push candidates like McCain and Romney and bury candidates like Thompson and Hunter, and we will rollover and expose our bellies out of fear of the (continually self-destructing) Democrats. Voting for a third party candidate WILL send a proper message, either to the Republican party which has abandoned it's conservative principles or to the "new" party that actually offers us conservative candidates.

I think we (meaning conservatives) should be discussing the conservative boni fides of various third parties and their candidates rather than harping to each other about McCain/Romney/Huckabee/Hillary/Obama. And FreeRepublic should be hosting that conversation and inviting all to attend and present their "case for conservatism".

The country survived eight years of Billary and we will survive four or eight years of Hillarbill or Obama _IF_ conservatives use that time to build a strong base in a new/different party, or a Republican party that "got the message" when we voted on principle rather than on politics in 2008. A party, new or changed, whose political philosophy is closer to that of Reagan, as well as the 1994 Republicans under Gingrich.

"Principled" means conservative first, Republican second.
That's my opinion, your mileage may vary.

Yes, and we’d have probably just as good a chance of that happening as we do of taking over the nomination at the Nat’l Convention! ;o)

Unlike Mclame, Romney is a class act.

Of course it is. Cynicism is the appropriate attitude toward politics.

“How can electing a Democratic President with a super majority Senate help preserve the country. This is insanity.”

Exactly. So why would anyone vote for McClintobama?

Too bad there isn’t a Republican running.

What is all this talk about Romney trying again in 2012. Did he cut a deal with McCain to be VP on a one-term McCain presidency?

An act of class. Mitt Romney has earned the respect of the Republic. I hope we see him again in a public venue.

It only took you 34 seconds to write that LONG post after the article was published on FreeRepublic. I think there might be some Hillary Supporters on this website trying to bring everyone down about voting McCain. They need to.

McCain 08!!!
—Can’t believe I said that.
