With Romney's pull-out (suspension, anyway), and barring huge unforeseen events, the GOP Pres nomination will go to McCain.
I didn't see any prior threads devoted to discussing a range of VP options. (I did see some suggesting particular people, like Condi Rice.)
As I see it, McCain SHOULD want to address three factors with his VP pick, although the 3d is far behind the first 2:
1. Ideological Balance. Someone to McCain's right on those issues where McCain is left, such as Amnesty, Gore-Bal Warming, Judges.
2. Relative Youth. McCain's age is a factor, making his VP pick more important than such picks usually are: McCain is much more likely than most presidents to become incapacitated, just as an actuarial matter.
3. A Popular Figure in a Swing State. Although this isn't as important, I note that there is little *geographic* benefit to picking, say, Gov. Perry of TX, because TX is going to go GOP anyway.
Thoughts?
I love Newt’s ideas, but he’s a lightning rod for a mix of fair and unfair reasons. Put plainly, swing voters largely dislike him. That’s too bad, mostly unfair, but there it is. ._.
McCain/Kennedy
or
McCain/Feingold
or
McCain Liebermann
Oh, I’m doing both. I’m hoping for an unforeseen event (without wishing to seem hateful or sinister, here). But I’m planning in case there isn’t one.
Who on the ticket would FIRE UP Conservatives? Who on the ticket would generate discussion for weeks?
The answer: A woman, and what a woman. - Alaska Governor Sarah Palin
I tried to think of someone with equal stature to McInsane, but unfortunately Ted Bundy isn’t available...
J. C. Watts!!
Right here. I think it'll be the Huckster.
Interesting idea! Does she have possibly-hurtful ties to Murkowski’s Machine, though?
But, but, but J.C. is an ordained Southern Baptist Minister.
Can’t have that POTUS!!!!
Felipe Calderon
It’s time, anyway.
Better get a Costco sized box of ammo, too.
Hillary, although they are perhaps too alike. But she will be available and does have name recognition.
John Bolton
On a serious note, I think his VP pick is going to be critical.
Remember the melanoma removed from the left side of his face?
That side looks swollen to me.
There might be a health problem a short while down the road.
JMHO
McCain/Kennedy in 2008
Where have I heard that combination before?
“I would go with Condi Rice. She is reliable on the War and would appease the conservatives.”
“I like the concept of someone younger and someone black. Michael Steele probably isnt well known enough, IMHO, but Hoodlum91 is on the right track, I think.”
I agree with this thinking...
