The 3.6 Percent Republicans (this is depressing)
The Weekly Standard ^ | 02/11/2008 | John J. DiIulio Jr.

Posted on 02/07/2008 7:01:12 AM PST by pwatson

Most leading conservative writers, radio hosts, and activists would probably concur that their liberal counterparts have never really connected with average Americans. Personalities on the right sell more books and get higher radio and television ratings. And until recently, conservatives seemed to be on an electoral politics roll begun in 1994 when the GOP retook the House. Within Republican ranks, for all the talk about crack-ups and implosions, the Reagan legacy still bridges divides between libertarians, social and religious conservatives, and national security conservatives.

By comparison, the left often draws flies. Win, lose, or draw, Democrats are prone to eat their own. Post-FDR, the last time that staunch liberals saw their favorite candidate elected president was never. In fact, the only time Democrats actually nominated a candidate who toed the liberal intelli-gentsia's line was 1972. George McGovern, who recently called for President Bush's impeachment (cue applause in Cambridge, Mass.), got 38 percent of the national vote.

But what is true for the liberal goose is true for the conservative gander. As Daniel Patrick Moynihan liked to quip, people are entitled to their own opinions, but they are not entitled to their own facts. John McCain is more conservative on more issues than average Americans are. By every standard measure (voting record and ratings, positions on major issues), McCain is conservative. Unlike his critics on the right, however, he is no ideological purist; he is conservative, but he is not what the pollsters call "very conservative." That is one obvious reason why he has such wide appeal. For even in our decidedly right-leaning mass electorate, few Americans, including few Republicans, answer to "very conservative."

This is an attempt to marginalize the Conservative Movement. It is part of the plan!

Don’t fall for it. Everyone needs to take a look back at the McCain fantasy.

The Mainstream Media pushes a candidate that will divide the party, citing his ability to “beat Hillary.”

The RINOs fall for it. They get in line. They think the Republican Party must move Left to win.

In the meantime, Conservatives are divided and ignored.

Fear, ignorance and apathy allow McCain to be nominated by a divided party.

The MSM starts calling conservatives “impotent,” even while driving a wedge between conservatives and McCain. The MSM never wanted McCain to be President, they just want him to be the Republican nominee...and lose.

In the end, the Democrat is elected and conservatives are marginalized. Evil conservative talk radio is damaged.

It’s been 10 years in the making. But we’re falling for it.

No, he is merely reporting facts.

The fact is that we have been, and are losing the war for the hearts and minds of the average citizen. We can list all of the reasons that we want, but that won’t change what is. John McCain, as illogical as it seems, is far more conservative than what the average American would admit to because we haven’t sold our ideas to the public since the ‘94 congressional elections.

The Republicans were once the vehicle of the “conservative” movement. Are they any longer?

We are going to hear this crap over and over from the RINOs:

MOVE TO THE LEFT! WE MUST MOVE TO THE LEFT TO WIN!

Meanwhile, the MSM starts hammering McCain and a divided Republican party. The Mindless Middle votes for Hillobama.

Hillobamo wins. Conservatives are marginalized. The RINOs fail. Talk Radio is damaged.

The Liberals Win.

This is what needs to happen: McCain works for CONSERVATIVE votes. Hard.

Conservatism WORKS!

Speaking of straight talk...

McCain gives us "straight talk" on YouTube: [direct quote]

"Let's have some straight talk...There's a lot of Anti-Americanism
My friends,
one of the things I would do the first day I am President of the United States is close Guantanamo Bay
I would close it and I would move those prisoners to Fort Leavenworth."

You have to vote your own conscience.

Think about this...

Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth?
I tell you, Nay; but rather division:
For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided,
three against two, and two against three.
The father shall be divided against the son,
and the son against the father;
the mother against the daughter,
and the daughter against the mother;
the mother in law against her daughter in law,
and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

"Wake Up!" It's time to get involved. It's time to vote.

Even bad things happen for a "reason." We must do our best. Read the excerpt from "Wake UP!"

If we are so so very close to having our first female president . . . if we are so close to having our first “president of color” (as I herd some “person of color” say recently), then why can’t we be much closer to having a THIRD PARTY president ??

Now I have.

Excellent. Thanks.

Scripture also exhorts us to have nothing to do with an angry man.

In power? All the worse.

Yeppir. McCain wasn't my first choice, but these guys frothing at the mouth over McCain are starting to creep me out a little. In some respects, we're past talking and are down to eating our own.

McCain has a better chance of winning if he alienates the right than if he alienates the mushy middle, although he needs both. We can blame as many people as we want, but a candidate running to the right of McCain will appeal to a narrow audience.

John McCain is more conservative on more issues than average Americans are. Mr. Dilulio is trying to redefine Conservatism

Correct, Conservatism is NOT populism.

i think that he dropped mainly due to Amnesty in 2006

You are right.

In 2006 he got a rating of 65

In 2005 he got a rating of 80

If I read the chart correctly, he got a 72 in 2004

"Conservatives care about the United States so much ... that they're willing to DEFEAT McCain -- give Hillary or Obama up to five Supreme Court nominations and allow Hillary or Obama to pull out of Iraq and snatch defeat from the jaws of victory -- to save the nation!!!"

There. Fixed it.

am no McCain fan and voted for Fred in NH but in the general i will vote for McCain if he is the nominee here is why: McCain ACU lifetime rank 82 2006 65 Hill 9 and 12 Bama 8 and 8

Just because Hill and Obama are liberals, it doesn't mean that Congress will go along with radical liberalism for policy. Hillary's damage will be limited and with a better chance to regain Congress we might actually see progress. remember, we got Welfare reform under Bill Clinton's Congress.

“John McCain is more conservative on more issues than average Americans are.”

Supports amnesty for illegal aliens

Voted twice against Bush’s tax cuts

Has a “C” grade from the NRA

Tried to foist an agenda of liberal judges to the Supreme Court

Supports elimination of Guantanamo for terrorist captives and their removal to the U.S. and the jurisdiction of the liberal American Courts

Oppose harsh interrogation methods for international criminals who are not covered by the Geneva Convention

Opposes the establishment of English as the official language of the U.S.

I could go on and on about this man and his despicable record in Washington. If he represents mainstream America we are in trouble and he’s not getting my vote. A Democrat WOULD be less offensive, but a real Republican would be far better.

What assurance do we have that a President McCain would appoint strict constructionists to the Supreme Court when he opined that Justice Alito was too conservative. One area that the incumbent President was good was selection of Supreme Court justices. And even he tried to push Harriet Miers, a woman with no conservative credentials but a family friend, to replace Sandra O'Connor. His Republican predecessors, George H.W. Bush, Ronald Reagan, and Richard Nixon, appointed their share of moderates and even outright liberals (David Souter) onto the Supreme Court.

I suppose a Warren Burger or a Sandra O'Connor are better than a Ruth Ginsburg or a Stephen Breyer, but not by much.
