In a surprise twist after a chaotic Super Tuesday, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) passed Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) in network tallies of the number of delegates the candidates racked up last night.
The Obama camp now projects topping Clinton by 13 delegates, 847 to 834.
NBC News, which is projecting delegates based on the Democratic Party's complex formula, figures Obama will wind up with 840 to 849 delegates, versus 829 to 838 for Clinton.
Clinton was portrayed in many news accounts as the nights big winner, but Obamas campaign says he wound up with a higher total where it really counts the delegates who will choose the partys nominee at this summers Democratic convention.
With the delegate count still under way, NBC News said Obama appears to have won around 840 delegates in yesterdays contests, while Clinton earned about 830 give or take a few, Tim Russert, the networks Washington bureau chief, said on the Today show.
The running totals for the two, which includes previous contests and the party officials known as superdelegates, are only about 70 delegates apart, Russert said.
The bottom line is that the two are virtually tied.
Obama won 13 states, some of them smaller, and Clinton won eight.
On Wednesday morning, the battle was on to shape public perceptions about Tuesday.
The Clinton campaign said it was crunching its delegate numbers but was not sure it was correct that Obama got more.
The Obama campaign sent an e-mailed statement titled: Obama wins Super Tuesday by winning more states and more delegates.
Campaign Manager David Plouffe said: By winning a majority of delegates and a majority of the states, Barack Obama won an important Super Tuesday victory over Sen. Clinton in the closest thing we have to a national primary.
From Colorado and Utah in the West to Georgia and Alabama in the South to Sen. Clintons backyard in Connecticut, Obama showed that he can win the support of Americans of every race, gender and political party in every region of the country, Plouffe said. Thats why hes on track to win Democratic nomination, and thats why hes the best candidate to defeat John McCain in November.
The Obama campaign attached an Excel spreadsheet containing state-by-state estimates of the pledged delegates we won last night, which total 845 for Obama and 836 for Clinton bringing the to-date total of delegates to 908 for Obama, 884 for Clinton.

I suspect that it would be easier to defeat Hillary than it would be to defeat that oily scumbag Obama. NEVER underestimate the stupidity of the mindless chattering class, especially those who are stupid enough to be “inspired” by an empty suit who spouts well-orated but wholly meaningless platitudes about “change” and “bringing people together”, and so forth.
You know, this is so true. He is the most unqualified embarrassment I can ever remember.
Just the fact that this guy is even viable is a testament to the idiocy of a huge chunk of this country.
The fact that he gets away with being vapid with virtually no scrutiny should be an embarrassment to the dinosaur media.
That is quite interesting, considering that she started off the primary season with far more money in her campaign coffers than ALL the other candidates...
“No those are elected delegates only. With the Super Delegates, Hillary Clinton will have approximately 80 more delegates which is not much at all.”
That’s not entirely true. That count is based ONLY on the delegates that have declared themselves so far.
There are plenty of ‘super delegates’ who we don’t know yet how they are going to vote.
How do you think the ‘super delegates’ are going to break in a state that Obama won by 65+%? That is assuming they don’t want to commit electoral suicide.
So there is a VERY good chance that he is ahead on ‘super delegates’ as well.
NBC News editors had best stay away from Washington DC Parks.
Obama has collected $6.2 million since polls closed Tuesday in California, 25% MORE than Hillary’s emergency loan to her own campaign.
I just saw an article that said she’s lending her campaign a few million dollars. And that’s just what’s being reported. I’ll bet there’s no shortage of money there.”
Didnt Bill Clinton rake in millions from the Arabs from UAE????
Plenty of corrupt soros money sloshing around to soak up, I’m sure.
“You know, this is so true. He is the most unqualified embarrassment I can ever remember.
Just the fact that this guy is even viable is a testament to the idiocy of a huge chunk of this country.”
Are voters STUCK ON STUPID?
Or maybe the Democrats just are embarrassed by the Clintons and want to get away from them and Barack is the guy?
My tak is that it depends if the Superdelegates announce after the March 4 primaries in Texas and Ohio. If they announce, there could actually be a de-facto nominee then. Of course, even if they announce, they are not committed until the convention. They can still change their mind.
Don't say things like that. You make ME want to vote for him.
I'm seriously considering the same thing. Between Hillary, McCain and Obama, only one has not spent the last decade or more pissing me off! That would be Obama. I'd rather see him win than either of the other two.
NEVER underestimate the stupidity of the mindless chattering class,
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
That bears repeating! I have wondered at times why it goes unrecognized by so many and then I realized “Doh”, the mindless class can never recognize its own stupidity! The mindless class is now the clear majority and they all have the vote. Someone please explain how we have any hope left in view of this fact.
I’m going to crossover myself, I don’t care for any of the Rep’s so I’ll just have to live with whoever wins, but at least I can vote against hitlery in the primary.
I will hold my nose and vote republican in the general however, The Supreme court is too important to trust it to any democRAT president.
