Snippets: On Wednesday, 25-year-old Jorge Dominguez Rivera told a federal jury that his brother was starting to kneel in the act of surrendering when agent Nicholas Corbett struck him in the back of his head or neck, pushed down and shot him all without provocation.
Corbett's lawyer told jurors in opening statements that the victim, 22-year-old Francisco Javier Dominguez Rivera, of Puebla, Mexico, was threatening to crush Corbett's head with a rock when the agent acted justifiably in self-defense. Corbett is charged with second-degree murder, negligent homicide and manslaughter in the January 2007 shooting near Naco.
$1.8M in currency 2.4K of marijuana seized at port of entry
EL PASO -- Agents with the El Paso Customs and Border Protection working at the Bridge of the Americas port-of-entry seized over $1.8 million in U.S. currency hidden in various paneled compartments of an SUV.
gents said the money was hidden in door panels and rear cargo door of a 1992 Ford Expedition. The seizure represents the largest made at the port of entry in over 10 years and possibly the second largest ever.
At approximately 11 a.m. Monday, agents said, the SUV with the family of three arrived at the port of entry. During the routine inspection, customs agents noted the demeanor of the driver and proceeded to use a density meter to check the vehicle for hidden items.
Heroin found in boots of bus passenger
These boots weren't made for walking. Customs agents at a Laredo port of entry found nearly two pounds of heroin hidden in the soles of boots in the luggage of a commercial bus passenger. Authorities say the heroin is worth about $170,000.
The bust happened Tuesday afternoon as the man on the bus, which was traveling from Mexico to Texas, was selected for a secondary inspection.
