MIAMI (AP) — A South Florida nuclear plant automatically shut down Tuesday, causing sporadic power outages throughout the state that affected up to 3 million people from Daytona Beach through the Florida Keys. Authorities did not specify the cause of the midday shutdown of both reactors at Florida Power & Light’s Turkey Point plant south of Miami but say there were no safety concerns. Power was already restored in some places by early afternoon and was estimated to be fully restored by 6 p.m., Florida Power & Light said.

“NRC: 2 Reactors Shut Down At FPL’s Turkey Point -Report”

February 26, 2008: 03:15 PM EST

Dow Jones Newswires

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Two nuclear reactors at Florida Power & Light’s Turkey Point station in South Florida shut down Tuesday afternoon, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission said, The St. Petersberg Times reported on its Web site.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The cause of the outages remains unclear, Tampa Electric spokeswoman Laura Duda told the newspaper.

She described a “significant disturbance” on the state’s electric grid. It could have been a transmission problem, or a large electricity generating unit unexpectedly going off line, or another problem altogether. “We are working with other utilities to figure out what the problem was,” she said.

Tampa Electric said 50,000 of its customers lost power between 1 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. Power remained down for less than an hour, and has now been returned to the majority of those customers, Duda said, according to the newspaper.”

“Grid Problems Cause Florida Power Outages, Shut Down Nuclear Plant”
Tuesday, February 26, 2008

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The utility said it was trying to determine what caused equipment failure and a fire at the substation that led to the outage. The company said such equipment failure should not have caused the widespread blackouts.

A FPL spokesman initially said its nuclear plant caused the outages to about a fifth of Florida’s population. But the utility’s nuclear spokesman, Dick Winn, later said grid problems caused both Turkey Point reactors to shut down.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Several Miami-area hospitals switched to backup generators when the power went out. Miami-Dade schools were scheduled to be dismissed on time, and officials said school buses would be running.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Bob Wild, a sports marketing consultant who lives in Miami’s southern Kendall neighborhood, said he didn’t even notice the outage, thanks to his home’s generator.”
