Snatching Defeat from the Jaws of Victory?
NRO ^ | 31 jan 08 | Victor Davis Hanson

Democrats want to lose — but Republicans don’t seem to want to win.

Just a few months ago, the 2008 presidential contest seemed predetermined. The New York lawyers Rudy Giuliani and Hillary Clinton were far ahead in their respective party polls. And in the one-on-one match-up, Sen. Clinton was all but declared the foreordained winner a year in advance.

But not now.

After Barack Obama’s unexpected surge in Iowa, Bill and Hillary Clinton resorted to chewing him up through their trademark politics of personal destruction. Thanks to Clinton Inc., we now hear almost daily that Obama is inspirational but inexperienced, that he had admitted to drug use, that his middle name is Hussein, that he really was not against the Iraq war, that he consorts with Chicago slumlords, that he spins fairy tales, and that he likes Ronald Reagan.

Maybe we need a box on the ballot that says,
"None of the above. Try again".

With the black vote, the liberal vote and the anti-Clinton vote Obama is looking very formidable nowadays.

If Hillary Clinton does end up winning her party’s nomination, November’s vote may hinge on whether moderates and liberals are nauseated enough by the Clintons’ brawling and character assassination to cross over and vote for a decorated Republican war hero — that is, if his own flag-waving party doesn’t destroy him first.

Here is how I see it. If Hillary gets the nomination, McCain beats her. Moderate Clinton dislikers will band with Conservatives who are concerned about the Clinton frontal assault on the Constitution via the "Billary" loop hole. If Barak gets the nod, McCain is toast as conservatives will either vote for Barak, stay home or vote third party.

I would plug my nose and vote for him. Hillary and Bill’s assault on the Constitution must be stopped. Although McCain assaulted the Constitution with Campaign finance reform, Billary supported it too and is even worse. I vote for the Republic over the party.

Hanson doesn’t have clue. He thinks McCain is a conservitive and we now don’t think he is conservaitve enough. That’s a total load of crap because McCain has never been conservative and conservatives have NEVER liked him.

Works for me. Leave the office empty for four years and try again next election cycle. Tell Congress to take a few years off.

Considering what Congress has become, this could only be a Good Thing for our Nation.

People thinking Hillary and Bill’s machine won’t get stronger and destroy their opponent don’t know the Clintons or the strengthedned Democrat party.

Mclame will lose, he’s another Bob Dole candidate.

The problem with McCain is that he always looks like an angry old man. In addition to sponsoring and getting passed the McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance bill, he’s just too independent to be an attractive candidate for most conservatives. I am truly wondering what can have happened to the GOP voters that we now are facing a McCain nomination.

Why does the GOP allow independents and Democrats to vote in GOP primaries?

So, you believe conservatives would vote for Barack instead of McCain? I’m beginning to detest the far right as much as I detest the far left. NUTS ... all of them.

I have no doubt that McCain is not much a conservative and an unreliable maverick partisan of the Republican party. Also, Hanson himself is not a republican, but a hawkish conservative democrat of the now non-existing Zen Miller, Scoop Jackson, Sam Nunn wing of the Democrat party. He is one of the best voices supporting our war against radical Islam, and shares a good number of other common views with conservatives, but he is not a right-wing republican.

If we had 6 major parties instead of two, they would better cover the spectrum of politics, with much more uniform voices within each smaller party. And we would not share the party with McCain (I would not), that's for sure. In reality, with only 2 parties having any say at all, the choice is limited.

Plus, lots depends on the point of view. Lets take Nadorites. From their point of view, Gore and Bush were all the same. In 2000 Nader received 2,883,105 votes nationwide with 97,421 votes in Florida, which is about 200 times !! more than the margin of vote between Gore and Bush. In all honesty, he did help Bush to win in 2000. From my point of view there is a huge distance between Bush and Gore. Then again, from the point of view of Ron Paul - not that much at all.

McCain's American Conservative Union rating average for 1990-97 was 88, but was only 74 for 1998-2006 and only 65 in 2006. One of the worst for a republican. Still, Senator Clinton has a lifetime ACU rating of 9 and Senator Obama has a rating of 8.

It will be all over before I'll have chance to vote in primaries in Maryland. I am disenfranchised - I am robbed of chance to vote for Hunter, or Fred, or Romney, at least. I would prefer to vote for somebody with ACU rating of 90+ but still I think there is a big difference between 60 and 9. I'll have to take 60.

On the larger scale: conservatives have to develop a good line up of politicians that promote conservatism and attract voters to conservative ideas, not just a temporary switch-over from Dems to GOP in the anti-Hillary vote. Unabashed promoters and educators in conservatism, like Reagan was and Rush is. Otherwise, the only thing we can hope for is a less stinky compromise.

How many “conservative candidate schools” are you aware of?

The league of women voters, the various left wing groups, even the DNC run candidate training schools for candidates and campaign managers ALL THE TIME.

You go and they teach you the in and outs of the mechanics of running a campaign. It is more than just a few commercials and posters. It is more than just hiring a campaign manager or consultant. It may be putting ALL the potential campaign managers on your pay roll to lock them out of helping others.

There is no “grooming school” for candidates on the conservative side.

I think it is easy to game a conservative union rating.

You can easily vote on a few small things and game the rating.

Students do it all the time with taking easy classes.

So, you believe conservatives would vote for Barack instead of McCain?

At least this conservative believes that McCain wouldn't hesitate to use any means at his disposal to silence his enemies--nearly all of whom are conservative. He's already demonstrated as much with CFR. Because McCain is a "Republican", he--unlike Clinton or Obama--would be able to do so without raising any cries of "partisanship".

McCain and the Democrats both view conservatives as enemies. He may have a decent lifetime ACU rating, but over the last few years he has repeatedly formed alliances with Democrats. He is a truly dangerous man.
