McCain beats Romney in Florida GOP race

MIAMI - Sen. John McCain won a breakthrough triumph in the Florida Republican primary Tuesday night, edging past former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and seizing precious campaign momentum for next week's string of contests across 21 states.

"It shows one thing: I'm the conservative leader who can unite the party," the Arizona senator said in a brief interview with The Associated Press. "It's a very significant boost, but I think we've got a tough week ahead and a lot of states to come."

The victory was worth 57 national convention delegates for McCain, a winner-take-all's haul and the largest single prize to date in the race.

Rudy Giuliani was in third place, his best showing of the campaign but possibly not good enough to warrant continuing.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee trailed but told supporters he would forge on.

McCain is tougher than Dole, smarter than Dole, and in better shape than Dole was in 1996. By the way I saw dole at the State Of The Union and, surprisingly, he’s still alive.

Also, Hillary Clinton is no Bill Clinton.

["EVERYONE! Get some perspective. McCain has 97 of 1191 delegate. NOT EVEN 10%!"]

A light [sic] of the impending endorsement of McCain by Guiliani would you care to revise your remarks.

So, Guilianis's ONE delegate going to McCain is a tsunami of defeat for Romney? OK.

So what happens if the Florida delegates are not seated?

Don’t do that; just send money to the good ones. I have a letter from the RNC on my desk, the reply envelope will be mailed tomorrow. No money is inside and across the survey is written “Build the Fence”.

National defense is a good enough reason to hold my nose and vote R with McCain, maybe. I even think Hillary might in the end be more secure than Obama on national defense. That said, I hope Romney is the man and I am not sold on him totally. We have to deal with the Islamic terror.

I’m a Romney supporter.

That disclosed, if I were to impartially (as much as I can) describe the candidacy of Romney, I’d say that his biggest mistakes were —

1. Spending too much in South Carolina
2. Waiting until Michigan to emphasize his business credentials

That said, I think he played a very good game against a very stacked field. When we started this, there was Romney, Paul, McCain, Giulaini, Huckabee, Thompson, Hunter, Tancredo, and Brownback. All of the rest except Tancredo are allies of McCain.

I’m proud of Romney. I’m proud of who he is and the campaign he has run. I think it’s courageous and honorable that he stood up to that time of scrutiny, and that he has invested some of his own fortune into his effort to serve the people of our country. And on Feb 5th, win lose or draw he has my vote. And should it happen that he comes up short, I hope that he will live a happy life and that in a few years time, should the opportunity arise and he is willing to give it another shot, I will be there supporting him again. He has truly inspired me.

My husband got the bar so he’s silly with text messages ;) I’m here and it’s not fun.

I think McCain will be destroyed in the general. I’d much rather have Romney and I’m not a Romney fan. I just think Romney would have a better shot in the general against either Hillary or Obama.

Oh, we’re gonna be screwed, imo, no doubt about that. I’m so disappointed that THIS is what we have.

I’m concerned about the next 4 years. It’s crucial. Times have changed and unfortunately the American puplic is a bunch of wussies (no offense). Except of course that that live in the mid west and texas and states like that. I live in the Northeast. I know most here are wussies. I’m fine with economic hardships. I don’t think the people on this side of the country can handle it. Politically, we’re screwed.

I just pray this country can survive 4 or 8 years of anti american crap from the President of the free world.

Did you vote for the person who pushed and lobbied the McCain-Kennedy bill from the administration?

What an incredibly stupid question. Thanks. Drive through.

Point taken. I’ve been very harsh on McCain, and I’d rather see Romney run against Hillery this year, but in this regard, you are absolutely spot on.

I think we’re arguing semantics here. I was for-seeing a significant victory, tactics notwithstanding.
