Grandma Arrested At McDonald's Called Officer 'Evil,' Report Says
MSNBC ^

Posted on 01/23/2008 11:31:08 AM PST by HD1200

CLEARWATER - The 75-year-old grandmother who was arrested Thursday at a McDonald's on a charge of disorderly conduct gave an officer lip, according to a police report. Jean Merola swore at the officer and said, "You are an evil man. Your wife is going to divorce you. Your kids probably hate you too. You are going to hell," according to the report.

Officer Matthew Parco was behind Merola in line and had received his drink; he asked her to move up so he could get around her but she didn't respond. Parco spent about 20 minutes asking Merola to move the car before she was arrested.

Nah, I’m Eastern Orthodox Christian, which means that my service last Sunday was so long that I’m still recovering from the mental fatigue, and lost focus before I could remember about you DASTARDLY PROTESTANTS.

Please, don’t tell my Baptist parents I said that. :-)

You’re obtuse. She was asked to move by McDonald’s, meaning that she was trespassing by remaining where she was.

If you believe in property rights (which you should if you claim to be conservative), you should agree it was appropriate to arrest her.

According to Florida law you are not trespassing until you are told that you are trespassing. Even then they have to ask that you leave.

Considering the way that people are creating data on this thread out of whole cloth, his pic should be interesting

Yeah, this thread definitely contains far more heat than light. Some are acting like Slick Willie in South Carolina...

Hahaha...my Grandmother was Ukrainian Orthodox. Her church insisted on doing her funeral service in Ukrainian (none of us speak the language.) Two and a half hours, in a church without AC, in the middle of August, listening to Ukrainian...whew, just thinking of it makes me tired.
RIP Grandma.

Okay, but she was asked to move. Maybe not technically trespassing (since the actual definition of the crime is obviously a little different in FL), but her conduct was obviously “disorderly.”

Let's assume a homeless guy sits down in a restaurant and is asked to leave. He says no. How many hours, if ever, do you think it would be before the police arrived? This cop wouldn't have responded to this call if he was across the street. He acted on personal motivation.

Maybe in your locality, I've seen things like that multiple times where I live and work, the locality where I work has an obnoxious panhandling ordanance and the police will advise the panhandlers to move on if they're being obnoxious or blocking or impeding pedestrian traffic.

The officer was was very patient from what I'm gathering (20 minutes while having abuses heaped on him by an old hag?). What will happen is this officer will go on elsewhere, and Stillwater will get rewarded with an officer who has a real authority complex and will taze the hag after 90 seconds the next time she pulls this stunt.

I think the Lady was a very nice person from an interview on Fox news.
She was put in handcuffs and driven to police Hdqrtrs.by a woman police officer who thought the arrest disgraceful.

McDonalds should ha ve serviced her a little faster with those unsalted fries.

From the report the Cop kept blowing his horn at the woman.

She called him a Brat, WOW, what a bad word.

If it doesn’t end in a reprimand for the cop and a settlement for the older Floridian, it has escalated into a national public relations nightmare, one that could have been avoided with better procedures.

Since the woman wasn't listening to the officer in the first place, for 20 minutes as customers were forced to wait in line for her, what would you suggest he should have done? I think he tried pretty hard to handle it diplomatically.

I can't think of any better procedures that would have made any difference in this case.

Tell her that if she moves again, free meal, free coupons. Almost always works. Much cheaper than lawyers and public relations nightmares like this.

LOL!

...as long as the rest of the line doesn't hear you.

"Hey, can I get free food if I refuse to move?"

"How about me? I can moon everyone until you agree to give me free food. Would that be OK?"

Breaking the law should result in punishment, not appeasement.

Maybe you should go to work for the State Department and campaign for more concessions for Palestine.

Yeah, I don’t claim any of the national churches, so I usually go to whatever one is near the base the Air Force sends me to. So far, I’ve been to Antiochian, Greek, and Serbian Orthodox churches. I can’t speak those languages fluently yet, but I GUARANTEE I can have a conversation in them about food.

If there’s anything we’re good at, it’s food. And being killed by Turks. But mainly food.

Thank you for the link “Pops”. It provided much, much more information.

You said:

“Ol’ grandma wasn’t budging before she got fries “without salt”? One would think that, in less than half the space of the twenty minutes the officer spent trying to persuade her, someone from the McDonalds could have supplied the unsalted fries?”

A strong implication that you think it took 20 minutes to get her the fries.

Bottom line.

If she’s blocking traffic at a business for an extended amount a time all because she refuses to move forward a foot, she’s the problem. Now it is certainly possible the Cop gave her attitude but two wrongs don’t make a right. Everyone else was stuck at the McDonald's drive through defeating the purpose of the special waiting spaces because she couldn’t properly park her car - even after being given direction to do so.

I apologize for being short with you.

Age has nothing to do with it. She was blocking access in a public place, and interfering with the business. Pretty simple, really. Someone posted the exact statute she was violating earlier.

Age has nothing to do with the expectation restraint? You honestly want to stand by that ludicrous assertion?
