John McCain's clinching of the primaries i n New Hampshire and South Carolina indicates that the GOP has serious problems. McCain is the least conservative of all of the Republican contenders, yet somehow his message appears to be resonating with disenfranchised voters.
McCain's win puts him in a position to trounce all comers in the Florida primary January 29th and Super Tuesday on February 5th. But his lack of the values conservatives espouse could spell disaster for Republicans who want to make sure that a true alternative to the liberal rhetoric of Hillary and Obama is offered.
Until now, there has been no frontrunner in the GOP race, with Huckabee winning the Iowa caucuses, Romney winning lower-profile Wyoming, Michigan and Nevada primaries, and McCain taking New Hampshire and now South Carolina.
Now admittedly Romney has the highest delegate count so far, but things could quickly change in the days ahead, which could spell trouble for those of us who wanted almost anyone but McCain.
How much longer Mike Huckabee will be able to hold on is uncertain. But Huckabee was counting on a clear victory from conservative Christians which he didn't get, largely from the undecideds. He's still a contender, but he is beginning to falter. Depending on how Giuliani does in Florida, his campaign could tank, and Fred Thompson is now on life support.
Which leaves us with McCain. He is a true war hero, and a fine man. But he is not a fiscal conservative, not a hawk when it comes to foreign policy, not a friend of those opposed to illegal immigration, and his campaign finance reform bill soured many in his party to anything else he might have to say.
Should McCain survive and become the nominee of the GOP, he will have truly risen from the dead. But like the old saying goes, his light at the end of the tunnel could be the headlights of an oncoming train wreck which might propel a democrat into the White House this November.

It really doesn’t matter at this point. I figure Fred is now an unrealistic long shot and his supporters need to realize this fact and find a new candidate to support. I doubt many of them will be jumping on McCain’s ship.
As someone who has interacted with McCain, I’m hear to tell anyone who will listen the man is an egomaniac, who doesn’t have the temperment to be a dog catcher, let alone a President. If you want Capt. McQueeg running the ship of state, then welcome aboard the USS McCain. Learn Spanish, because that’s what the hordes of illegals will expect after senor McCain get ahold of the reins of power.
And if Hillary wins the nomination, as it appears she will, the base will be out in force to vote against her.
You might be surprised how many of us will sit this one out if McCain is the GOP’s guy.
McCain will be.

No BS! I don't support McCain, but when compared to the others --- minus Fred --- McCain's has better conservative credentials, like it or not. He's been pro-life, pro-gun and he does have more national defense experience than anyone running. Its his mavarick political status that people don't like about him.
Giuliani is a full fledged, life long liberal. Romney was a full fledged, life long liberal, who reformed his politics on the verge of his presidential run. Romney is a man without principle or conviction. Like Bush43, Huckabee is a pro-life social conservative and another big government Republican nannystater. Outside of Fred, the choices suck.
As for the NYTimes slamming Rooty Toot, I say, more more more. IMO, anyone supporting Giuliani, McCain, Romney or Huckabee is supporting moderate/liberals, at best.

I have not read this thread yet, but the title looks interesting. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1956805/posts
I agree with you. It is insanity. I cannot believe ppl have such short memories.
“If Obama is nominated, were toast.”
Obama is a brilliant and talented man, but he has a lot to answer for:
The picture of him snubbing the national anthem; his racialist Farrakhan-loving pastor-mentor; his rejection of his own half-brother because he wasn’t racial enough; his association with crooked real estate man Tony Rezko; his association with his violent presidential-candidate cousin in Kenya.
I don’t underestimate Obama, but I wouldn’t call him unbeatable.
Mitt has a good chance to win in FL. And as for my state, CA, he is running 2nd behind McCain in the polls. If Mitt can win CA and FL, he’s the nominee. Fred voters: you need to vote for Mitt, in order to stop McCain.
If Fred drops out I am voting McCain.
None of the other guys can beat the beast.
Remember, he is old. A lot will depend on who he picks as his veep.
Mitt doesn’t have a prayer in the general!
Have you seen his negatives?
This is not really rocket science. When you are faced with people you think are moderates or liberals, and you want a conservative, you pick the one who has offended conservatives the least.
In the final analysis it is all about last year. The enormous earthquake of conservative rage at McCains Amnesty Bill was the single most profound act of the right wing anger since the 2000 attempt by Gore to steal Florida.
To act now in any way that REWARDS McCain for his treachery last year for his literal sneering in the face of conservatism renders that entire event last year nothing more than mere petulance. The shouts were that he will pay. ANY act taken now to allow him to escape punishment defiles the dignity of last years victory.
And so, the choice is clear. It is not one of voting FOR Romney which is a concept the Thompson folks wont want to fully embrace. It is, rather, one of honoring last years effort and punishing the perpetrator.
If McCain is the nominee his support among conservatives and or Christians will be tepid. You won’t see too many folks that describe themselves as Reagan Republicans working too hard for him. Rather maybe some working to try to keep Mrs. Clinton out of the office.
Not a very passionate way to run a campaign.
As a Fred supporter, I won’t be choking on any crow pie.
I hope he endorses McCain if he drops out.
McCain is the only one who can beat the beast.
Good points.
Jorge Bush was all behind that bill.
And they were all punished.
They lost.
“I think we have to rally around Romney.”
Yes, I think that’s true. I keep thinking of a Democrat abomination in the White House, and can’t stand the thought.
The worst Republican is better than the best Democrat.
I don’t think Fred has a very good chance of beating McCain. It is time for Fred Thompson supporters to choose another candidate.
A lot of us are more interested in stopping Hillary.
And if Fred drops out, that leaves McCain.
