Why is it that most players who have a chance to get a fumble try to pick it up and run instead of diving on it?

Sportcenter syndrome. Same reason DBs try to run back INTs from the end zone and don’t get past the 20, same reason guys lay on big hits with their arms at their side instead of actually tackling, same reason nobody in the NBA can shoot from the floor anymore but they all know how to spin a 360 during a dunk. They want to make the hilight real.
