It’s a “down” body part. When those hit the ground they count differently than hands and feet. Basically everything between your hands and feet if they hit the ground during a reception establishes you as “in”, just like they’d establish you as “down” if there was contact with the other team involved.

but whats the rationale behind one knee being worth two feet? Is an elbow the same thing? Yes. Anything that would down the runner by contact in-bounds would end the play before he could go out of bounds. If he wasn't touched, then he still established position on the field of play.
