Romney did cut taxes and kept down the growth of government. What you are not factoring in is him being surrounded by liberals on all sides and needing to bend a bit in order to get some good done. He was in a very difficult postition.

The other possible candidates are all weaker. Romney is the candidate the Dims most fear. This is clearly shown by the number of attacks on him from liberal sources.

Don’t take this wrong, I’m not anti-Mitt, but why in the world would the Democrats be afraid of anyone in this Republican field? The (R) party is picking favorites and going for the jugular of the other candidates and the party is heading for disarray because of the dissension. The only person Hilary is worried about is Obama and the only person Obama is worried about is Hillary. They’ve got enough ammunition on the remaining Repubs and they won’t have to use kid gloves either.

Geez, I called it in December:

New poll has McCain tied with Romney in NH.

Fred Thompson is putting all his eggs in the Iowa basket...

If he withdraws, he would likely endorse McCain. Wouldn't that be something. The great conservative hope ends up helping open-borders McCain.

It will be McCain.

I believe this was set up before he decided to run. If McCain ran strong in SC, Thomson would endorse him. If Thompson took SC or if McCain faltered, McCain would endorsed his "good friend".

Many seem to forget the Thompson was McCain's campaign manager and their roots run deep.

Thompson will drop out by Wednesday or so. The problem as I see it with this plan, is that Thompson's support will not go to McCain in any large percentage. Only a portion would, or will. Certainly no more than 50 percent. I cannot imagine more than that moving to Mr. Maverick.

This is a better deal for Romney. And if so, this will sink the Huckster. He will likely be out after Super Tuesday and before Texas. He has little to work with and will be dead broke by that time. I doubt he will even take Arkansas. He is in Texas now begging for funding. (At Chuck's ranch)

Executive experience (excellence in fact), actual rational plans for dealing with the problems that face us, traditional values, and abhorrence of identity politics.

The Dims can be beat if we are of a mind to beat them.

Unfortunately, the Dems will have an advantage: They will be united, while we will not. Who are we going to rally around? McCain? No! Huckabee? No. Mitt? No. (no, the answer is no. Fair or not, I don’t see the base rallying behind Mitt). I don’t think anyone in the race can band the party back together while the Dems will have no such problem.

claudiustg:

You hit the nail on the head! The Dems FEAR Romnibus (my affectionate nickname for him, don’t ask me where I got it ‘cause I made it up) more than Old Man McCain. Why? Because Romney will be in the PERFECT position to:

-Nail Sir Hillary on her pro-illegal “no woman is illegal” and pro-Amnesty positions. McCain, being the co-author of TWO Amnesties, or was it one?, has no leg to stand on and could not attack Hillary on the Invasion. He’s a failed Senator who dumped his long-time wife for a rich b**ch in order to get re-elected to the Senate. He’s like Gingrinch in that way, another despicable human being.

-His health care plan for MA WORKED!! Hillary’s plan in ‘93 failed. The guy is SMART, let me tell you!

-Label her “the past” and himself “the future”, even if he doesn’t do it to her ugly face.

-Show that he’s younger, invigorated, bright and handsome, things that are only partially true of Hillary (she must be bright, IMHO, but that’s where the similarities end)

You Fredsters at freerepublic:

Get over it! NOW!! Fred (who I recently supported and hoped would do well) is finished. He might not even win his own state. I’m hoping he’ll back Romney, but my gut tells me he couldn’t do that to his friend, Johnny Mac.

Josh Painter:

That’s not giving Romnibus much credit. The man is smart, good looking, young (60), devoted to his family and country—AND he’s RICH!! So what about a flip-flop or three? As long as he doesn’t do it on the Invasion, I’m happy. I can’t see him going back on his word. He’ll be elected largely because of Indy cons and returning GOP cons who will pull the switch for him because we believe he’s finally seen the light on the Invasion.

Hattie:

I spent 7 years thinking of ways to bring down GWB. Just remember. They might not have been friends, but Sad Sack Johnnie Mac is GWB’s best friend on the war. When I saw Debbie Schlussel’s now-forgotten piece at WND in Oct. 2001 on “Bush’s Terrorist Buddies”, I knew that GWB had to be stopped. Sadly, he wasn’t except on the Amnesty.

I am an utter Mark Steyn sycophant, but... [Michael Graham]

...tell me again how McCain is winning?

As I predicted here at NRO, John McCain came out on top in South Carolina by getting the same 1/3rd of the vote in the Palmetto State that he got in New Hampshire and Michigan. But did he “win?”

In 2000, running against George W. Bush and the entire Carroll Campbell machine in South Carolina, John McCain got 42% of the vote, and 240,000 votes out of 573,000 or so cast.

Tonight, he got 33% of the vote in a field where his top challengers—Romney and Giuliani—aren’t even running, and 135,000 actual votes. If just the same people who voted for McCain in 2000 had voted for him today, he would have won 50+% of the South Carolina vote. That would have been truly impressive.

Instead, John McCain LOST the support of 100,000 people—and he’s the winner?

McCain had the same “success” in New Hampshire (McCain, 2000: 48%, 116,000 votes; McCain 2008: 37%, 89,000 votes) and Michigan (2000: 50%, 600,000 votes; 2008: 30%, 257,000 votes).

Yes, overall participation in the GOP primaries is down this year—a fact that should concern Republicans regardless of who they choose as their nominee. But that doesn’t mitigate McCain’s overall weakness. In fact, as the one person who’s run for president before and who is touted as a crossover candidate with broad appeal, his slice of the electoral pie should have MORE impact as the number of challengers rises and the number of voters declines.

McCain is a weak candidate by any measure. Only once in his two presidential races has John McCain ever won a majority of the vote, and that was Michigan in 2000. He has yet to crack 40% of the vote this year, and he’s done even worse among self-identified Republicans (as opposed to independents and crossover Democrats).

If you really want to see McCain’s weakness, however, try this thought experiment:

It’s October, 2008. America’s economy is in a recession. People are demanding change and new ideas, someone to give them optimism and hope on domestic issues. On stage, facing off in their final presidential debate to discuss jobs, economic policy and hope for the future are John McCain and Barack Obama.

And be sure to imagine how it will look on television, and to people who don’t really follow politics (they are, after all, the swing voters who will pick the next president).

Now, tell me again how any Republican won tonight...?

Your post was a sarcastic joke, right? It had to be. And I will admit, it was pretty funny once I figured out you weren’t serious. lol

Oh, NOW I see!! You thought because I ended my post with “AND...HE’S RICH!!” meant that the rest of what I wrote was in kidding. Wrong, and I’m sorry I gave that impression. It was unintended...

Actually, Romney’s being rich is a PLUS, though the MNM tries to make it “a negative”. They hate Mormons, which is bigotry, and that gets manifested in their envy of his personal wealth.

If Fred wanted to go out in a classy fashion and keep people guessing, he would endorse Duncan Hunter and encourage him to re-enter the race. That would solidify his support for the conservative base and their principles, with basically no cost to himself since the possibility is so unlikely.
