10 months ago the only guy who could beat Hillary in all the polls was Rudy G. Where is he now? Are you people honestly dumb enough to think polls 10 months before a General Election can tell you who will win? Before any General campaign is even started?

1980. Reagan ran as an outsider going to DC to clean up the mess. Reagan won
1984. Old Machine politician and former Senator Mondale ran by the Democrats against Reagan. Reagan won.
1988. VP running on the Reagan legacy against a DC outsider barely won.
1992 DC outsider ran against sitting President. Outsider Clinton won.
1996 Old career Senator named Dole with a stellar war record ran against Sitting President. President Clinton won.
2000 DC outsider ran against sitting President's VP, outsider Bush won by a few hundred votes.
2004 Old career Senator named Kerry with a supposed stellar war record ran against sitting President. President won.
2008. The GOP Establishment plans to run an old tired worn out career Senator with a war record against the former 1st Lady or a 1 term Senator.
Based on that historic record just why would anyone be so hopelessly naive to think McCain has any chance at all against Clinton Inc? Ah yes, the magical "polling data" the same magic data 10 months ago who told you your only choice was Rudy G.
I cannot decide which is more amusing. The McCainaics almost total political ignorance, or their wholly unwarranted arrogance.
The GOP has failed in its ability to do a reality check. Its a party that has become top heavy with ideologues who have no effective strategy.
I mean they have effectively disenfranchised 20% to 30% of the Republican electorate, with no hope of "swing voters", a hope myth that has sustained their foolishness.
All the dems need to do at this point is nominate a warm body. Checkmate.
First, Bush won handily in 1988. Second, the comparison to Dole in 1996 is misplaced. Dole was up against a incumbent with a booming peacetime economy. He also had Perot siphoning off votes. And McCain is a much harder campaigner than Dole was (and frankly has more independent appeal).
The secret to beating Hillary is simple: independents, independents, independents. The one who wins them wins the White House. Hillary will lose them handily versus McCain under almost any scenario - they simply loathe her. The polls simply confirm time and again the formula that is already there.

This is where we differ. When the facts are not on my side, there is only so long that I can pretend they are. If you will research my postings here, you will find that I have been one of McCain's biggest critics. But I can no longer deny the facts. The electorate does not share my opinion. I see no evidence that anyone I might prefer can defeat Hillary or Obama.
Keeping the White House in GOP hands is more important to me than avenging McCain Feingold or McCain Kennedy.
P.S. Bob Dole lost in a three way race. Might have been different without Perot. AFAIK, he also did not attract independents the way McCain does. And he had a much stronger RAT opponent than Hillary.
