I can’t even deal yet with the idea of McCain being the GOP nominee, BUT ... back in 1980, the contest was fierce between the conservative Reagan and moderate Bush (41) factions of the party.

Reagan chose Bush as his running mate because ultimately what they agreed on was more important than where their positions diverged. If he’d chosen his political soulmate Goldwater, who was still ocnservative in 1980, he never would have been elected, but I guess he could have stood on principle.

Did choosing Bush make Reagan a sell-out, or diminish respect for him?

Of course not but McCain is a completely different animal. He is the antithesis of what the GOP should be looking for in a nominee. His favorite sport is pissing off the rank and file of our party and then telling us to shut up and take it because he knows better...and the s.o.b. gets away with it because of his P.O.W. status. There is no telling what a McCain Presidency would do. I shudder at the prospect.
