McCain can be thought of as a Scoop Jackson Democrat, in the same category as Joe Lieberman. Maybe conservatives wouldn’t be so angry with him if he didn’t pretend to be conservative on domestic issues, which insults our intelligence.

Personally, I think a lot of McCain's domestic failings over the past 8 years can be laid at the feet of his now wanting to give the President any easy victories. Why? He never got over what the party hacks did to him in South Carolina in 2000.

Why is it that on the DEM side the far left loonies decide the nominee, but on the GOP side, the right wing is being marginalized????

The problem with McCain (and Huckabee, Guiliani, and Romney) is that if they win the nomination they will feel they got it because of moderates and not the conservative base of the party. If elected they will not feel beholden to conservatives and will govern to attract the support of moderates from both parties. The first sign of that would be if McCain named Lieberman as his running mate. But, as I said, he is the only one of the liberals who would be an effective commander-in-chief on day one, and we are at war. We owe it to our troops go provide the best commander-in-chief possible.
