You are in control of your license. If some bureaucratic weenie asks you to take it out, ask them why.

That's what I do with my primary ID, which is my retired military ID card. I never use my DL.

I've been doing a variation on that. The window in my wallet is a little too small and also kind of cloudy, so I do take it out, but I don't hand it to them, I hold it in front of their nose. I hold on to it good. If they try to take it, they're in for a surprise. A couple have tried.
