It is easier for us now to push back at our own when they try to do something we don’t like. "Pushing back" is only talk. It's essentially a threat, or promise, not to vote for the bugger if he does the thing you oppose, or doesn't do the thing you favour. What happens when he goes against you ... and then a year or two later, you go and vote for him anyway? Seems to me, you lose your credibility. Will your "push back" do any good then? Or will the politicians correctly view it as mere empty posturing?

We pushed back on the amnesty bill. That push was against more than one person. It was against the entire Washington establishemt. And it was effective. One person cannot get something done in Washington. John McCain will not bring down the republic by himself. Hillary Clinton well might. So, again...if push comes to shove, I will hold my nose and vote for him, should he become our nominee. Anyone who lets the camel's nose of any democrat under the tent by voting 3rd party or not voting at all is part of the problem. Don't sacrifice the good (a comparitive term in McCain's case only) in search of the perfect. You will never find the perfect. You will, however get the bad if you run away from your imperfect family. Just hold their feet to the fire. Again, the amnesty issue is a good example of how we CAN have influence.

Of course it was ... it was a credible threat to throw the bums out ... and since they did actually back down, we don't have to carry it out. What are the consequences of electing a pro-amnesty, pro-open-borders President? What does that do to our credibility next time the 'honorables' in Congress try to pull off amnesty, or drag their heels on protecting the border?

I think you just contradicted yourself.

Anyone who lets the camel's nose of any democrat under the tent

What do you say of anyone who lets the camel's nose of a RINO under the tent? I say a RINO may well be worse than a 'Rat ... and that anybody who votes for a RINO is the problem.

Just hold their feet to the fire.

With what? Provably empty threats? If we vote for RINOS, that's all we'll ever get. And that will just lead to more actual 'Rats. We elected a hugely Republican Congress in 1994. For a decade, those supposed Republicans dragged their heels on conservative issues ... even with a Republican President. In 2006, the 'Rats took over Congress. I wasn't surprised. The RINOS deserved to lose, because they no longer deserved to win. Continuing to support RINOism in '08 is a guaranteed losing proposition.
