CASPER, Wyo. Mitt Romney grabbed the early lead in Wyomings Republican caucuses Saturday as the state had its brief moment in the political spotlight sandwiched between attention-getting contests in Iowa and New Hampshire.
The former Massachusetts governor gained the first four delegates while California Rep. Duncan Hunter won a fifth.
Romney easily led the overall vote with more than 50 percent. Hunter was second with 21 percent and Fred Thompson, who hadnt won any delegates, was third with 17 percent. Results were expected throughout the day.

Not surprising to see Romney do well, as there are a lot of Mormons in Wyoming.
About 12% is all.
I know he is digging into his own pocket to campaign.
“Wonder if WYO has a large Mormon population, and is that helping Romney”
The words “Wyoming” and “Large Population” don’t belong in the same sentence:)
I like Fred and Duncan but they don’t seem to “get” what it takes to become President in the modern USA — not that I’m happy about it.
Come to ND. The ground is bare here. Temp in upper 30s. I LOVE global warming! :)
Mitt was not exactly my first choice but I have liked him well enough all along. Fred just looks asleep most of the time, even tho he says he is juat a low key guy he still needs to appear to be enthusiastic now and then. Duncan is likable and oriented properly on the issues but he is not catching on enough to credit. Tom dropped out to support Mitt. I will never under any circumstances vote for the remaining other guys so Mitt Romney is my choice and I like him.
One statistic stated the Mormon pop. of WY is around 9%, don’t know how recent it is.
Maybe they want to bring back tradition.
NATIONAL REVIEW ONLINE’S “THE CORNER”
The Change Candidate [Byron York]
I got an email today from the Romney campaign highlighting an AP article headlined “Romney Grabs ‘Change’ Theme As He Tries to Rebound Against McCain in New Hampshire Primary.” The campaign added that Romney’s “message of bringing real change to Washington is reaching New Hampshire voters.”
Is it just me, or does this seem a bit transparent? It’s not as if Romney has never talked about changing things in Washington before, but you get the impression that the biggest change he has brought about recently is the one he made in his campaign pitch on the flight from Iowa to New Hampshire. Did the voters say they want change? Sure, I’ll give ‘em change.
Romney will be in debates tonight and tomorrow with a number of clever, determined opponents. Should the man who has had to fight off charges that he is a flip-flopper, who said many times that he would preserve and protect a women’s right to choose and that he most definitely was not a follower of Ronald Reagan, now portray himself as the agent of change? And then there’s the fact that not all that long ago 2002 Romney said that his main opponent in New Hampshire, John McCain, “has always stood for reform and change.” Don’t the zingers write themselves? We’ll see tonight.

The religious affiliations of the people of Wyoming are shown in the table below:
- Christian 78%
- Protestant 53%
- Lutheran 8%
- Baptist 8%
- Methodist 6%
- Presbyterian 4%
- Episcopal 4%
- Other Protestant or general Protestant 21%
- Roman Catholic 16%
- LDS (Mormon) 11%
- Other Religions 1%
- Jewish 0.1%
- Non-Religious 20.9%
All the lightweights are jumping on the “Change” bandwagon.
How about some substance instead of “change”?
Wyoming is less than 10% LDS.
So Wyoming is 78% Christian, under which is included the 11% of the Moromn faith. Interesting.
Less than 10%. About 9.5%.
“I like Fred and Duncan but they dont seem to get what it takes to become President in the modern USA not that Im happy about it.”
Agreed. To be fair Duncan was always a really long shot. Long term congressman, with no national name recognition from Southern California. I had higher expectations for Fred though.
What the heck is wrong with being rich and spending your money on getting elected? I think it is a heck of a lot better than hat-in-hand and giving back chits. Unlike a lot of people around here I LIKE rich people; they make better boss/clients than poor people. I hope everybody either leaves them alone or better yet aspires to be one.
