CASPER, Wyo. — Mitt Romney grabbed the early lead in Wyoming’s Republican caucuses Saturday as the state had its brief moment in the political spotlight sandwiched between attention-getting contests in Iowa and New Hampshire.

The former Massachusetts governor gained the first four delegates while California Rep. Duncan Hunter won a fifth.

Romney easily led the overall vote with more than 50 percent. Hunter was second with 21 percent and Fred Thompson, who hadn’t won any delegates, was third with 17 percent. Results were expected throughout the day.

“Wonder if WYO has a large Mormon population, and is that helping Romney”

They probably do. Idaho does.

So will a Romney win in Wyoming be marginalized because of LDS support where the Huckabee win in Iowa was not?

As much as I dislike Mitt....this lineup looks more like a true GOP lineup with Hunter and Fred in the top three. Rudy 00000. LOL.

Romney won in two southeastern counties (Laramie and Albany) where Mormon influence is not particularly strong. LDS membership is greater in western Wyoming, which is adjacent to Utah. I think we can chalk Wyoming into the Romney column. He will need the support, as it looks like McCain is surging in New Hampshire, where the latest Rasmussen Poll shows him with a sizable lead over Romney.

“You can read anything into this at all. The three candidates getting votes are the only ones who campaigned there.”

It’s the same everywhere. Rudy got nowhere in NH when he didn’t campaign there. Should we ignore all the states?

A few votes is NOT statistically valid. This is a marathon, not a sprint.

This is *SO* not over yet.

No, I think it still matters. It means, too, that Mitt can likely take many of the western states. I think though that every candidate is likely to have areas where his advantages are strongest. Because of that fact, this could be a long race this time.

Romney taking credit for Duncan Hunter's fence, in Romney's flier.
The information of Hunter's fence should have been in ..... Duncan Hunter's flier, etc.

Romney should apologize.

I think those who live around the Mormons are less likely to be troubled by Romney the way some of those who do not are.

If I remember my religion map correctly, Wyoming is in the Rockies Mormon Belt that extends down to Nevada.

Lots of LDS in Wyoming. This overcomes the evangelical factor.

Next to Utah, Wyoming is probably our most conservative state.
