A Hard Loss for Romney By John Ellis
It's one thing to lose as you are. What you lose is an election, but there's always another election and in the case of presidential primary politics, a new electorate that awaits you in the next state. It's another thing to lose as you aren't. Mitt Romney was never the 700 Club right-winger his campaign managers conceived. He was and is a man of business and a very capable one at that.
He's all but doomed now. Senator John McCain will beat him in New Hampshire, probably by a lot, and Romney's media coverage will evaporate and his candidacy will consequently die. On January 9, his managers will walk in and say that the campaign needs $10 million or $15 million to continue and that he, Romney, will have to write the check. Everyone who would contribute has maxed out. Everyone who might won't. Two-time losers don't get new money. It's a basic rule of politics.

You have lurched uncontrollably into the truth. LOL
Catholics do not believe in works salvation. From “Iesu Domini,” the definitive statement on salvation written by Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict) and John Paul II. Iesu Domini, written in 2000, was an attempt by the Pope to put to rest, once and for all, the claim that Catholicism teaches works salvation.
“It must therefore be firmly believed as a truth of Catholic faith that the universal salvific will of the One and Triune God is offered and accomplished once for all in the mystery of the incarnation, death, and resurrection of the Son of God.”
It is an elegant treatise by two eminent Christian theologians, and quite worthwhile reading for any Christian.
Romney’s polling negatives are astronomical, no way he would carry a general election—even though he is well coiffed and his platform isn’t bad. Fred’s far and away our best chance against the Dems, in case his abysmal coverage in the media hadn’t clued you in to that.
Are those tears in his eyes?
Nothing. You don't seem to understand that I nor many of the rest of us believe one word or promise coming from Romney.
Romney has flip-flopped on virtually ever issue over the past five years.
You don't seem to remember what Rush Limbaugh was telling us back in 1992 -- character matters and Romney has none. He is, possibly, a bigger a flip-flopper and liar than Bill Clinton.
Interesting analysis or prediction.
I don’t really get the rage against Romney. I’d much rather him than Huckabee. Foreign policy and all that.
It is not just for business schools...
Hey Mitt, you remember that lesson on Return on Investment back in business school...
Bet you do now....
I think Huck has to be favored to win South Carolina, but Fred still has a good shot, especially as Huckabee's gaffes hit critical mass.
Yes. I understand. But that is the way the Protestants put it. I think historically that way of putting it was so Luther could break free of the need of the Catholic Sacraments.
Mormons don’t believe we are saved by works either. But you can’t tell the Evangelicals that.
Saw Rush Limbaugh on Fox News last night during Iowa coverage.
Limbaugh said, "I think Romney is committed to his conservative positions. I am confident he will keep them."
I agree with Limbaugh, who has reservations about ALL the candidates.
I am someone who finds it refreshing, not awful, that a man who previously made pandering lib statements NOW has come to promote FULL, HEAD-ON conservative positions on taxes, morals, defense matters, WOT matters, etc.
Romney should be rewarded, so to speak, for his courage rejecting his past lib panderings.
At the very least, he should not be made to look like a demon.
They have ALL called each other a 'liberal' in the heat of the campaigns.
No one has accused Fred Thompson of being a liberal.
How do you feel about McCain?
No problem. I generally avoid religion threads, but all the political threads are devolving into religion threads, what with Huckabee stirring the pot. Just wanted to set the record straight. As a convert from Protestantism to Catholicism and a homeschooler living in the south, I’ve had evangelicals try to save my soul many times. And no matter how often I insist that my soul is in the best possible Hands, they persist.
So what’s your assessment of Huckabee’s chances with Mormons if he happens to win the nomination? I think he’s toast with Catholics.
A few thoughts.
The concept of being a great businessman and CEO describing exactly the wrong skills for being a “government executive” and CIC is absurd. Cheney was CEO of Halliburton for five years and was also Chairman of the Board.
John McCain won both Iowa and New Hampshire in 2000. This did not affect GW Bush’s fund raising.
Michigan, of course, replaces South Carolina this year and there is no evidence Huckabee is going to win Michigan.
What is unfolding is leading into Guilliani’s strategy and it is astonishing that this is not understood.
The talk here, not the public rumor, of Thompson needing a strong third, is apparently being forgotten given his weak third placing. Very late in the evening McCain actually overtook him briefly. That is not a strong third. That is almost fourth.
It is also astonishing that the Republican base, which could agree only on one issue of the past year — that there must not be liberalized arrangements for illegals, is willing to tolerate Huckabee or McCain. This base is supposed to be able to assert itself in the south, and yet Huckabee and McCain are not in single digits in polling. Apparently illegal immigration isn’t that important after all.
I don’t see this as a loss for Romney.
Too many flip-flops.
