Huckabee trades jokes with Leno; Clinton appears on Letterman

Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee traded jokes with Jay Leno and played bass guitar with the "Tonight Show" band on Wednesday, the eve of the Iowa caucuses he hopes to win.

Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton also made a cameo appearance on David Letterman's "Late Show" as the funnymen returned to work for the first time since their writers went on strike two months go.

The visits broke some of the tension surrounding the nominating contests that begin Thursday with the Iowa caucuses. Clinton and Huckabee are in tight races, she with Illinois Sen. Barack Obama and he with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

Huckabee told stories about his hardscrabble upbringing, including that it took his parents a year to pay for a $99 guitar they bought him for Christmas in 1966.

"It was a big sacrifice for them, but I played that guitar until my fingers nearly bled, and until their ears nearly bled," he said. "And they said, 'Son, why don't you become a minister?'"

He went on to become a Baptist minister, then was elected Arkansas governor.

Clinton opened Letterman's show with a taped greeting: "Dave has been off the air for eight long weeks because of the writers strike. Tonight, he's back. Oh, well, all good things come to an end," she said.

Huckabee had to cross a picket line to appear on Leno's show, despite earlier saying he supported the writers. Picket signs read, "Huckabee is a scab," and, "Huckabee, what would Jesus do?"

Campaigning earlier Wednesday in Iowa, Huckabee said he believed the writers had agreed to allow late-night shows on the air. But only Letterman and fellow CBS host Craig Ferguson struck deals allowing writers to come back to work. Corrected, Huckabee murmured, "Hmmm," and, "Oh."

The writers guild urged him not to cross their picket line after he flew out to California. "Huckabee claims he didn't know," chief union negotiator John Bowman said. "I don't know what that means in terms of trusting him as a future president."

My understanding of the prebate is that everyone gets it, so it has no bearing on reporting or not reporting income which would no longer be the basis for taxation. Above the poverty line, everyone pays the Fair Tax on new merchandise.

His parents were right; and so was Huckabee; until he changed his mind. Hopefully; he will find his greatest reward in the pulpit; and not in Government. When all else fails; he will have a decent job. And I do hope - ALL else fails, here, for Huckabee.

And why would you spend that much for a kid?

Why criticize his parents Christmas decision? Huckabee carries enough baggage that is legitimately debatable.

Huckabee said he believed the writers had agreed to allow late-night shows on the air.
Has Hickabee ever actually gotten a single fact straight in his entire hick life?

Well Huckabuck I have a question for you how many DRUG DEALERS, PROSTITUTES, AND PIMPS do you know who report their income. So I guess they are all showing up at the poverty level and getting tax rebates.
Good catch!

His point was that those below the poverty line will get a rebate under Hickabee’s plan so all those drug dealers buying their potato chips and wide screen TV’s and not reporting any income will qualify for a Hickabee rebate on the sales tax they paid.

(If you still need help with the concept, please ask for more details.)

And your point is what? Do you understand the purpose of the rebate? It’s what makes the entire scheme progressive, rather than regressive. Similar to a flat tax with a standard deduction. Again, I’m haven’t made up my mind on the fair tax, but Huckabee is the only candidate so far who’s willing to tackle a bold change in tax policy along the lines that conservatives should applaud, not denigrate.
You are so missing cquiggy's point it's unbelievable. Are you a Hickabee supporter? If so I'm starting to understand where the Hick gets his following, from people who can't read a simple post and understand.

Any signs that said "Leno is a scab"?

Huck's "explanation" isn't believable either.

The Huckster knows it would take a constitutional ammendment to get rid of the income tax and that it would never pass . The Huckster just wants to ad an additional 23% national sales tax on top of all the taxes we already have. Huckabee has met a tax he doesn’t like.

Huckabee used to be a democrat and he has always been a liberal.

Huckabee is for Amnesty for illegals and their 100 million relatives back in the 3rd world.

Huckabee has raised taxes and grown the government many times.

This Huckster would destroy America and the Republican party (100 million illegals would do it).

I’d have loved to have seen her face if Letterman had had the balls and patriotism to ask her such questions as:

1. So, how much money did you get from China for selling your country down the river?

2. How many felonies would you estimate you’ve committed to become QUEEN BW*CH OF the new country—NORTHAM?

3. Is Huma better in bed than Reno?

4. When did you first realize that Communism had successfully taught you to hate the USA and to do traitorous things to destroy her?

You missed that point also. The law-abiding, taxpaying citizens with low income are a different group than the drug dealers. There would be an exemption for low income people who do file an income tax return.

Why criticize his parents Christmas decision?

Because it is fueled by pure hate. There is no bottom to the slander and mudslinging of the Huck Haters. They don't realize how much it reflects upon their own characters and not upon Mike Huckabee's.

Well, attacking the parents for a Christmas gift in l966 - or anytime - for that matter is a nasty stretch.

That said, have to say I am no supporter of Huckabee; and in fact, do not understand his 'Republican' appeal as a leader - given his record. He surely a Democrat; albeit a 'Christian' Democrat; but the 'D' word is a big one and a critical one as it fashions America's future.

NO, Hillary is NOT a strike breaker. Letterman’s production company cut an interim agreement with the Guild, so that he could return to the air WITH his union writers. Leno and NBC did NOT make an agreement with the Guild so
Huckabee IS a strike-breaker. Which should have been very clear, since he had to cross a picket line to get into the studio. And the pickets were carrying signs that said, “HUCKABEE THE SCAB”. So ignorance is less than no excuse.
