Huckabee trades jokes with Leno; Clinton appears on Letterman

Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee traded jokes with Jay Leno and played bass guitar with the "Tonight Show" band on Wednesday, the eve of the Iowa caucuses he hopes to win.

Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton also made a cameo appearance on David Letterman's "Late Show" as the funnymen returned to work for the first time since their writers went on strike two months go.

The visits broke some of the tension surrounding the nominating contests that begin Thursday with the Iowa caucuses. Clinton and Huckabee are in tight races, she with Illinois Sen. Barack Obama and he with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

Huckabee told stories about his hardscrabble upbringing, including that it took his parents a year to pay for a $99 guitar they bought him for Christmas in 1966.

"It was a big sacrifice for them, but I played that guitar until my fingers nearly bled, and until their ears nearly bled," he said. "And they said, 'Son, why don't you become a minister?'"

He went on to become a Baptist minister, then was elected Arkansas governor.

Clinton opened Letterman's show with a taped greeting: "Dave has been off the air for eight long weeks because of the writers strike. Tonight, he's back. Oh, well, all good things come to an end," she said.

Huckabee had to cross a picket line to appear on Leno's show, despite earlier saying he supported the writers. Picket signs read, "Huckabee is a scab," and, "Huckabee, what would Jesus do?"

Campaigning earlier Wednesday in Iowa, Huckabee said he believed the writers had agreed to allow late-night shows on the air. But only Letterman and fellow CBS host Craig Ferguson struck deals allowing writers to come back to work. Corrected, Huckabee murmured, "Hmmm," and, "Oh."

The writers guild urged him not to cross their picket line after he flew out to California. "Huckabee claims he didn't know," chief union negotiator John Bowman said. "I don't know what that means in terms of trusting him as a future president."

I understand the liberal appeal for Obama... he is like a cold beer to the liberals. Clinton is like swigging down a Jagermeister....

On the otherhand, we have steady old wisky.... with a little bit of fake malt liquor huckster.

Note his parents did not suggest he run for President.

I’ll add to that. Obama is a foo-foo beer, with more fruit and pretentious labeling than beer.

Here are 2 statements:

Good ministers don’t make for good Presidents.

Good Presidents don’t make for good Ministers.

What kind of guitar ran $99 bucks in 1966? And why would you spend that much for a kid?

Even better question: Why didn’t he work to earn the money himself? When I bought my first computer, it was with money from my paper route, from washing cars, walking dogs, etc.

I agree with the foo foo.... but liberals are soooo jaded with the septic tank politics of the clintons.... they are looking for a savior.... unfortunately for them, they only have junior, who couldn’t argue his way out of liberalism.....

The whole story of Huckabee and the writers union is hilarious.

I mean, it’s bad enough that he was picking sides, and siding with the union (actually, maybe that’s bad, maybe not, it’s not like I want to support the networks or studios either, but I tend not to support union strikes).

But he took that road, what many would see as a more “liberal” road, and backed the writers — or at least said he did.

But then he lost whatever gain he could possible get for being “pro-union”, by crossing the picket line to appear on Leno. Except somehow he thought there was an “agreement”. Which is sad, because I knew there wasn’t an agreement, and I’m a nobody, not someone running for President.

And then, having said he supported the writers, and then claiming he didn’t know an agreement was not reached, he then STILL went on the show, KNOWING there was no agreement.

So his position is I care about writers, but not enough to take a minute to learn the facts before agreeing to appear. And I support the strike, and wouldn’t have crossed the picket line, except I flew all the way out here so I’m going to go ahead and cross the picket line since I’m already here.

What is the message I’m supposed to get from that? I guess he’s a man of his word, because he didn’t bail out on Leno even when he learned he was there under false pretense?

Hmm, I just realised the show should be on right now, so I should be watching — I wonder if I missed it.

Of course, if I was like Huckabee and supported the writers, I would change the channel and boycott Leno in solidarity with the writers.

I wonder if that’s what Huckabee thinks I should do?

“What kind of guitar ran $99 bucks in 1966?”

A cheap one. Guitar prices have come way down in price and up in quality since then. (They started importing them)

So Arkansas Bill plays the the sax, and Arkansas Huck plays the bass. Need I say more?

I’ll go out on a limb here. I’ll bet NONE of the striking writers would have voted for Huckabee whether he crossed the picket line or not.

The Huckster thinks you should vote for him on moral grounds.

‘cause he’s so consistent. Just... ignore that picket line, please?

99 bucks in 66 could probably get you a Les Paul...

I’ll have to say that watching Huckabee play the bass just now was a bit disconcerting, because fairly or not it reminded me of Clinton playing his Sax.
