POLL: Clinton, McCain lead in New Hampshire
MSNBC ^ | January 1, 2008 | Domenico Montanaro

Posted on 01/01/2008 3:07:33 PM PST by Kuksool

With exactly a week to go until New Hampshire, McCain has pulled ahead of Romney and Clinton has opened back up a double-digit lead in New Hampshire, according to a 7News/Suffolk University poll. McCain gained 12 points since a month ago in the same survey to vault ahead of Romney 31%-25%. Romney had led in the December Suffolk poll 31%-19% over McCain. Giuliani is third with 14%, a three-point drop from 17%. A month ago, Clinton led Obama by 7 points (33%-26%), but now the poll shows her with a whopping 36%-22% lead. Apparently, Clinton has peeled away some of those undecideds from a month ago as that number dropped from 19% to just 12% this month. Edwards comes in third with 14%. (He had 15% in December.) The Republican numbers: McCain 31%, Romney 25%, Giuliani 14%, Huckabee 9%. The Democratic numbers: Clinton 36%, Obama 22%, Edwards 14%.

“If McCain - a former torturee himself - feels that by using alternate interrogation instead of the three or four waterboardings that may have occured during his presidency is worth the gain in national respect, then I can accept that.”

-Tell that to someone dying of radiation burns in one of our larger cities
-Tell it to someone who loses a spouse in a terrorist attack
-Tell it to a child who lost his parents to a dirty bomb.

~Well, we could have prevented it from happening, but someone in Sweden objected to 30 seconds of simulated drowning.~

Pawlenty scored below 50% in his Governor victories. It is questionable if he can flip MN. A stronger Veep for McCain would be Gov Mark Sanford of South Carolina - fiscal conservative with military experience.

Polls are meaningless. Dean did well in the polls before his meltdown in 2004.

If I was a betting man, I would bet on McCain to finish 1st (based on his victory in 2000) and Ron Paul would come up strong with 2nd place finish. He has 20 million dollars to spend.

I will just say this - there are an awful lot of unspoken assumptions behind your post. I wouldn't presume to put words in my mouth either.

“I dont think McCain would pick Huckabee as a running mate. It doesnt buy him anything strategically.”

First of all, I said “like” Huckabee, not necessarily Huckabee. Also, McCain needs to make peace with the values base of the GOP. Huckabee, or someone like him, would be the way to do so. That would be both a tactically and strategically wise move. How Iowa comes out will be a big indicator.

I agree. I know Pawlenty and McCain are friends but I'm not sure picking him would be a wise move. You only get one V.P. nominee and he needs to be able to deliver something.

McCain does poll better than anyone else in Minnesota (which is not saying much) but unless polling were to show that Pawlenty could almost certainly put McCain over the top there I would focus on another pick. Sanford might be a good pick if there were any danger of a Southern-religious defection. I would look into whether Sarah Palin could cut off some of Hillary's female margin.

“I wouldn’t presume to put words in my mouth either.”

It’s not personal.

My prediction is that McCain will take first, Romney second, and Paul a distant third.

Let’s face it, relatively speaking McCain is preferable to Romney, Huck or Giuliani.

He's worse than two of the three (Giuliani is the worst of all candidates).

Not only is McCain pro-amnesty, he is anti-free speech, anti-gun and anti-tax cuts.

I wouldn’t vote for McCain even if you held a gun to my head. I hate him.

“I would look into whether Sarah Palin could cut off some of Hillary’s female margin.”

Palin works on a Romney ticket, too.

How about JC Watts as a GOP Veep? I suspect there will be a lot of potential voters out there who will be pissed off at the way HRC Inc. destroys Barack(i.e. Drug dealing).

I won’t vote for McCain if he gets the nomination. I even hope he loses if he gets the nomination. Republicans can do some soul-searching for 4 years under a ‘rat president, and maybe they’ll pull their heads out and nominate someone worthy in 2012.

Haven’t given up on Thompson getting the nomination. Pretty much think it’ll take a miracle for Hunter to win it now, so I’m hoping someone will pick Hunter for V.P.

Succinct and to the point.

I believe most GOP voters feel simularly. Eight years of stickin’ it to the Country will do that.

In my opinion, Palin would not work on a Romney ticket - it would be derided as woefully light because there are just six years of the governorship between them both. This hightlights what I view as perhaps Romney’s main weakness, which is his having only served one term of elective office.

Is there a reason you pinged me to this? If you want to discuss something (like I was trying to do in the previous posts) fine - if you want to make forgettable jabs that’s something else.
