POLL: Clinton, McCain lead in New Hampshire
MSNBC ^ | January 1, 2008 | Domenico Montanaro

With exactly a week to go until New Hampshire, McCain has pulled ahead of Romney and Clinton has opened back up a double-digit lead in New Hampshire, according to a 7News/Suffolk University poll. McCain gained 12 points since a month ago in the same survey to vault ahead of Romney 31%-25%. Romney had led in the December Suffolk poll 31%-19% over McCain. Giuliani is third with 14%, a three-point drop from 17%. A month ago, Clinton led Obama by 7 points (33%-26%), but now the poll shows her with a whopping 36%-22% lead. Apparently, Clinton has peeled away some of those undecideds from a month ago as that number dropped from 19% to just 12% this month. Edwards comes in third with 14%. (He had 15% in December.) The Republican numbers: McCain 31%, Romney 25%, Giuliani 14%, Huckabee 9%. The Democratic numbers: Clinton 36%, Obama 22%, Edwards 14%.

“It may be starting to seep in that at least for the GOP, what the good people of Iowa and New Hampshire have to say means absolutely nothing.”

I respectfully don’t agree.

The nominee will be among the top three in Iowa AND the top two in NH.

In this poll Hunter is up 3% and even with Paul and Thompson.

The McCain List.

New N.H. poll:
McCain 31%
Romney 25%
Giuliani 14%

McCain leads in N.H. for the first time in months (talk about good timing!).

You should be aware though that McCain will probably pick someone like Huckabee as his running mate to shore up the values base. Notice how John and Mike as saying nice things about each other; it has to be more than having a common enemy in Romney.

I dont think McCain would pick Huckabee as a running mate. It doesnt buy him anything strategically. He will pick someone who would get him a blue state he would otherwise have no chance of winning. Top prospect I think would be Gov Pawlenty of Minnesota.

Its baffling and sad to see so many sheeple in America, that is of course IF you believe polls....

The Dark Side has done a good job promoting its agenda....and so many have gobbled it all up.

Where is the pragmatism in putting someone hostile to the Constitution and conservatism in the WH with a Republican label? Kill the GOP faster than the Dems can do themselves? Make conservatism look like a failed ideology by putting its antithesis in the highest office?

How do you feel about McCain’s opposition to waterboarding?

Doesn’t McCain want to close Gitmo?

“Hck wins Iowa and McCain wins NH”

I still don’t get where that’s the end of Romney. Can you explain?

McCain picking Huckabee as his VP would be disgusting.

I’d rather have Ron Paul as second in command than Huckabee.

Besides that I don’t see what Huckabee provides in a general election. McCain already has the support of independents so appealing to them with a VP pick would be pointless.

What about a McCain-Fred ticket?

If McCain - a former torturee himself - feels that by using alternate interrogation instead of the three or four waterboardings that may have occured during his presidency is worth the gain in national respect, then I can accept that.

Closing Gitmo? Isn’t the Bush administration working towards that end right now?

“Besides that I don’t see what Huckabee provides in a general election.”

It’s McCain’s M.O..

Flipping off the party as goes down in a 49 state loss.

Mainly electability. McCain has very broad cross-over appeal, putting states like MI, WI and NH in play in the general election. In my estimation, he’s also more conservative than Romney, Huck or Giuliani. Though McCain voted against tax cuts, he’s a spending stalwart; he won’t be as profligate as Bush has been with the federal treasury.

Romney is the ultimate, opportunistic flip-flopper (giving JF Kerry a good run for his (wife’s) money). Huck has a ton of defects, the first of which is his shameless use of religion to attract primary voters. For Giuliani, just three words: Comedy of errors.

Completely agree about Pawlenty (R-MN). Huck nets McCain zero — and would even open his ticket up to a lot of the criticism that Huck is now rightfully absorbing (spendthrift, winning the U.S. for Christ, etc.). Pawlenty could put MN in play on a McCain/Pawlenty ticket, which would be potent. Imagine Hill spending money trying to just HOLD MN, MI, WI and NH. . .

I think McCain may end up looking outside the current field of candidates for his V.P. if nominated.
