It is an old military saying. One may learn from the experiences of another and thus avoid some personal failures. But, whether wisdom is gained through education or experience it was originally gained because someone made a mistake.
The US fire code is a good example of this. For many of these codes many people died before they were implemented.

Learning from others, good and bad, is imperative. The tone of this thread seemed a bit bit more ‘down home’ to me. Kids do well with more IMO.
