Bloomberg Moves Closer to Running for President
NYTimes ^ | 12/31/07 | Sam Roberts

Buoyed by the still unsettled field, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg is growing increasingly enchanted with the idea of launching an independent presidential bid, and his aides are aggressively laying the groundwork for him to run.

On Sunday, the mayor will join Democratic and Republican elder statesmen at the University of Oklahoma in what the conveners are billing as an effort to pressure the major party candidates to renounce partisan gridlock.

Former Senator David L. Boren of Oklahoma, who organized the session with former Senator Sam Nunn, a Democrat of Georgia, suggested in an interview that if the prospective major party nominees failed within two months to formally embrace bipartisanship and address the fundamental challenges facing the nation, “I would be among those who would urge Mr. Bloomberg to very seriously consider running for president as an independent.”

Next week’s meeting, reported on Sunday in The Washington Post, comes as the mayor’s advisers have been quietly canvassing potential campaign consultants about their availability in the coming months

He’s got more money than Romney...so like a Steve Forbes I guess...I know he’s republican... i understand he did that because he would not have any runoff possibilities in republican primary..

"I know he’s republican"

He was never a republican and "resigned" as one to become an independant. Thank goodness.

I think he’s actually running for VP. He’s going to try to get the Dems to put him on the ticket, luring them with hundreds of millions of dollars of his own money, and the threat that if they don’t do it, then he’ll run against them with hundreds of millions of dollars of his own money, either on the GOP ticket or as an Independent.

He was a Democrat who nominally became a Republican to run for mayor and now has re-registered as an Independent. So he seems to be whatever is convenient at the moment.

“If this little scum troll runs, do people think he’ll take more votes from a Dem or Republican???”

It depends on who he uses his millions of dollars to run attack ads against.

Bloomberg is not a Republican he was a Liberal Democrat and ran as Rino in NY to be Mayor. He is a tried and true Liberal and will take votes from a Democrat not a Republican.
NY business wise is worse off under his tenure as Mayor. He has increased taxes and regulations and business is leaving NY in droves.

That’s what I was thinking... He’s MUCH closer to the Dems, and will spend most of a billion dollars towards blasting the GOP, so that doesn’t bode well... at all...

Few corrections: Bloomberg is an independant. He changed his registration earlier this year. Romney has more money than Forbes, but Bloomberg is a billionaire.
