Musharraf was told on numerous occasions that he is essentially responsible for her safety. He knew that if anything happened to her, his power would be in serious jeopardy. This stinks of Al Qaeda.

I don’t think Musharraf would, because ultimately, it would undermine what support he has. I wouldn’t be surprised if dissidents in the army (that is, the AQ sympathizers who he has been tyring to purge) were involved, though.
