Opposition leader Benazir Bhutto has been critically injured after a suspected suicide attack at a political rally in Pakistan.
It was believed to be a suicide attackShe is undergoing emergency surgery at a nearby hospital, Sky News sources say.
The explosion went off just after Ms Bhutto left the rally in Rawalpindi, minutes after her speech to thousands of people.
That he should, with our blessings!
They said on FOX that Al Qaeda has a 48% favorability rating, so they go ahead and kill Bhuto and the fanatics blame Musharaf. Suddenly their favorability is through the roof. I told my dad this is just like Star Wars and how the Emperor seized power.
It is also similar to the Reichstag fire where the nazis burned it down and blamed it on the communists so hitler could seize power.
Nite Nite AIT :)
I don’t know what he could say that will help.
“Honestly? I think they should ALL shut up til the actual president has made a statement.”
Ditto. Otherwise they all just look like a bunch of opportunists.
McCain up live on FOX now.
Yep, they can help themselves. In fact, many of them would like to see total chaos in Pakistan. However, this can't help Obama and his excessively naive rhetoric.
I’d hate to think why...
Good point. Do we have any Indian FReepers or those in touch with friends or family in India? I would like to know what, if anything is going on in India regarding this event.
McCain sounds good as well.. and I have not been a McCain fan.
Ouch, McCain just basically threw Sharif under the bus. Said he is not the person to take bhutto’s place as opposition leader.
I didn’t get that at all from what McCain said.
It’s amazing how quickly all her biographies on the net have been updated with her assassination.

vehicle to leave a political rally for the Pakistan People’s Party in Rawalpindi, Pakistan.[63] An assassin shot her before detonating an explosive vest hidden about his person, killing about 20 people and wounding many more.[64][65]
“The attack occurred just after Ms. Bhutto left the rally, where she had given a campaign address to party supporters in the run-up to the January 2008 parliamentary elections.[66] She died at 6:16 pm local time at Rawapindi General Hospital.[67] It is currently unclear as to whether her death was caused by the blast itself or the shots fired by the assassin; it is believed she died from a fatal gunshot wound to the head with secondary gunshot wounds to the neck and chest.”
I don’t think they’re the same, but obviously, there is some kind of agreement between them.
Bhutto’s death is a positive for either camp.
She had to know she was a target. It makes you admire her courage, but you wonder if she couldn’t have lived longer in exile.
What is there not to get from "Sharif is not, in my opinion, the person to take over the leadership from Bhutto"??????
What is your take on that statement?
How incredibly sad. She was a remarkable woman.
“Also- as a precursor- I keep thinking of the great Afghan Massoud- his assassination on 9/9/01.”
A fine comparison and an indicator that AQ and the Taliban will have other plans put into action now.
This is a black day. Bhutto had areas of concern in her prior role as President, but she was hoped to find a way to share power with Musharaf. That failed and she sought to go it alone.
The anger in Pakistan will be the direct result of the refusal to provide her protection from the government even though hundreds died in the short time she had returned. AQ/the Taliban have made it clear they were behind multiple attacks to kill her.
Some people need to get up to speed on the history here. This is a BLACK DAY.
And Pakistan’s days ahead could be similar to the results after the bombing in Iraq of Samara’s Golden Dome Mosque.
Prayers are in order friends. The US does not have in any shape or form a handle on this. Musharaff could be targeted within days or hours. AQ/the Taliban have made many failed attempts.
The next one might not be.
Jeez..whomever was the shooter, he made damn sure..didn’t he?
Pretty sure that is word for word what he said.
