Zogby Poll: Obama Leads Top Republicans

Telephone survey shows fellow Democrats Hillary Clinton and John Edwards would defeat some GOPers, lose to others

UTICA, New York - Illinois Sen. Barack Obama would defeat all five of the top Republicans in prospective general election contests, performing better than either of his two top rivals, a new Zogby telephone poll shows.

His margins of advantage range from a 4 percent edge over Arizona Sen. John McCain and a 5 percent edge over Arkansas’ Mike Huckabee to an 18 percentage point lead over Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, the survey shows. Against New York’s Rudy Giuliani he leads by 9%, and against Fred Thompson of Tennessee he holds a 16 point edge.

The telephone survey included 1,000 likely voters nationwide and carries a margin of error of +/– 3.2 percentage points. The poll was conducted Dec. 12–14, 2007.

Democrat Hillary Clinton of New York would defeat Romney by a narrow 46% to 44% margin and Thompson by a 48% to 42% margin. She would lose to Huckabee 48% to 43%, to Giuliani 46% to 42%, and to McCain by a 49% to 42% margin. The data suggest that Clinton has improved her position slightly. A November Zogby Interactive poll showed her losing by small margins to all five of the top GOP candidates.

These suppositional polls are worthless.

The only way to match up two candidates is to match them up in debates, compare policies etc, after both of them are confirmed.

Zogby is a Democrat, but he’s also a Muslim, or at least his brother is. After 9/11 his polls get a lot more biased. This poll is probably cooked.

Well considering how disastrous your non stop support a year ago for Socialist Jim Webb over George Allen, (ACU rating 92%)turned out, one has to wonder why anyone follow your advice and support McCain? You have a prove track record of continually backing closet Leftist political candidates simply on the bases of having once upon a time worn a military uniform Why should any Conservative listen

Oh, would you SHUT UP already! I don't back military-avoiding, chickenhawk "macacas" (like the failed UVA jock who skirted 'Nam and who also failed as our senator and who you seem to have developed a major man crush for) ... it matters more to me that a Navy Cross-winning, former Reagan SECNAV at least has walked a mile or two in a pair of combat boots and so is invested in the men and women taking on the top threat facing this country: the Global War on Terrorism. BTW, he also has a Marine son involved (your candidate didn't...nor does your current heart throb whose 5 sons equate campaigning for him with patriotically serving their country.)

PHONY SOLDIER!

Hillary would be horrible domestically, and bad internationally. Obama would be terrible domestically and an absolute disaster internationally, and may even re-convert to Islam once in office. Not a pretty picture for America if we can’t hold that office.

Actually this is probably the Doug Wilder Effect. You remember that when Mr.Wilder ran for governor of Virginia he was polling 12 point ahead of his opponent, but won by only 2 points. Exit polling indicated that people were telling pollsters that they would vote for Wilder because they did not want ot appear racist to the pollster, but when they got in the voting booth voted for the white guy instead. Same thing will happen to Obama.

Any poll about Obama’s chances will be tainted because people don’t want to be perceived as racist.

This is why we have campaigns.

I think that a few months of a strong Republican candidate telling the nation about B. Hussein Obama's real positions and record, his muslim background, and the truth about his phony "Afro-Centric" church affiliation, and he will be lucky to do as well as McGovern.

I am sorry I have met Webb & have had the displeasure of having to work with him during those Reagan years.
Webb is fundamentally a jack-ass !
He has a chip on his shoulder a mile high.
I was picked to work with him on a DOD project back in those RR years even though I was quite young and new to the DOD world. It was felt since I come from the red-neck Appalachian world that Webb is so proud of, even though a mere youth (Then!) perhaps I could communicate with him !(I couldn’t !) He tolerates NO disagreement even when the matter at hand is something that he has no education, training or experience in. In fact he acts if his ignorance of a subject endows himself with a special insight!
He was a flop as a Navy Sec mainly because he couldn’t & wouldn’t work with anyone. (So it wasn’t just me!)
We are seeing similar displays of his childish petulance here in the Senate as our Va senator. Of course since its so hard to actually measure success in a legislative job, Webb will probably be there forever. All a Senator has to do to be judged "successful" is posture & draw attention to himself, skills Webb has in abundance.

This comparison is too soon to be meaningful in a non partisan mix targeted poll. This is strictly name recognition.

Zogby will always have polls that are slanted to create controversy, so he can get more press.

This has turned into quite a little kerfuffle, leaving the Zogby people with a lot of explaining to do. Charles Franklin at Pollster.com takes the last Zogby poll that purported Clinton losing to the Republican wanna bes and tears it apart from top to bottom.

Zogby’s brother James is head of the Arab American Institute. If you say John is Catholic (Maronite Catholic?) then I presume that’s correct.

He is the founder and current President/CEO of Zogby International, a polling firm known for both phone polling and interactive, Internet-based polling

I do not trust Zogby. He has Arab ties. ‘Hussein’ Obama would be fine with him; hence, this promotional poll.

I concur...that's one of the reason I believe we should back McCain as he shows the best chance of beating both.
