Russell Means is a left-wing nut case. He does not represent most Lakotas.
To: Sopater
This is more than just an interesting piece of news. The Lakota Reservation is owned by the Lakota. Essentially a part of the united states has just seceded from the Union. This has far reaching consequences..... Very far. There will be some SERIOUS fall out from this, even though it does not seem to be recognized yet. The States involved have just lost a massive chunk of territory. They also have the rights given every other Nation on earth. What we may have is a Israel-Palestine type problem on our hands folks. They are a sovereign Nation within our borders. Don’t make light of it, this is Serious.

All the heated rhetoric aside, if this is indeed for real, it will be very interesting to see what happens when this reaches the Supreme Court, because the annullment of these treaties has all kinds of potential ramifications.

Do you think they’ll let me in? Living like the Dakota did back when would be great.
To: Sopater
The new country would issue its own passports and driving licences, and living there would be tax-free - provided residents renounce their U.S. citizenship, Mr Means said. Is it just me, or did this guy just tell all the Mexican illegals in the US that they're welcome to come live on the reservation?

Good luck getting everyone to renounce their U.S. citizenship.

Just ship a few truckloads of whiskey to the reservation as a bribe. Problem solved.

Tell the welfare chief that the government teat just dried up...Oh wait, the U. f’n N. will come to their aid. Much noise will be made, and for the U.N’s convenience they will let the Indians die, only to point their fingers at the U.S with a whole new set of accustions....

More than 15 years ago I wrote that the Balkanization of the United States was coming. This might be just a PR stunt by Russel Means, but it is a crack in the foundation. We’ll see whether it is repaired, or allowed to spread. I believe that it certainly encourages others.

Does this mean a state of war has been re-established between the United States and the Lakota Nation?
