Lakota Indians Withdraw Treaties Signed With U.S. 150 Years Ago

WASHINGTON — The Lakota Indians, who gave the world legendary warriors Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, have withdrawn from treaties with the United States.

"We are no longer citizens of the United States of America and all those who live in the five-state area that encompasses our country are free to join us,'' long-time Indian rights activist Russell Means said.

A delegation of Lakota leaders has delivered a message to the State Department, and said they were unilaterally withdrawing from treaties they signed with the federal government of the U.S., some of them more than 150 years old.

The group also visited the Bolivian, Chilean, South African and Venezuelan embassies, and would continue on their diplomatic mission and take it overseas in the coming weeks and months.

Lakota country includes parts of the states of Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming.

The new country would issue its own passports and driving licences, and living there would be tax-free - provided residents renounce their U.S. citizenship, Mr Means said.

The treaties signed with the U.S. were merely "worthless words on worthless paper," the Lakota freedom activists said.

So... do we send in the cavalry?

Withdrawing federal support should suffice.

To where?

Just find some worthless real estate somewhere that no one wants. Give them Kansas.

Thanks but we'll keep it. How about giving them Oklahoma? I wouldn't mind booting OSU and OU from the Big 12.

Kansas is the "and" between here and there.

I have relatives in Kansas. Actually I like the place but it's fun to give them a hard time.

Russell Means is a left-wing nut case. He does not represent most Lakotas.

This is more than just an interesting piece of news. The Lakota Reservation is owned by the Lakota. Essentially a part of the united states has just seceded from the Union. This has far reaching consequences..... Very far. There will be some SERIOUS fall out from this, even though it does not seem to be recognized yet. The States involved have just lost a massive chunk of territory. They also have the rights given every other Nation on earth. What we may have is a Israel-Palestine type problem on our hands folks. They are a sovereign Nation within our borders. Don’t make light of it, this is Serious.

You bet ya. If you are not an American citizen any longer than you forfeit your right to Social Security. Social Security does not have the money to support non citizens.

"They where allowed to live on this land as part of a treaty. If there is no longer a treaty then they are not entitled to the land. "

Some might say that we where (sic) allowed to live on this land as part of a treaty. If there is no longer a treaty then we are not entitled to the land. Realistically, if this is or becomes a genuine legal effort, it might get really interesting in court.

I agree with you. These people have been repeatedly Betrayed by the United States. We may never be able to make up for what our government took from them, but we CAN decide to walk a new path together... its time to make some real changes. This is a wake up call, one we would be best served by heeding!

The stated that they won't tax their citizens. They have no control whether or not we will tax their citizens. If the casinos will not pay their taxes, then we should shut them down ... It is how wars are started. The power to tax and enforce your will.
