Tancredo Scuttle (Tom Tancredo drops out tomorrow, endorsement up-in-the-air)
The Atlantic ^ | December 19, 2007 | Marc Ambinder

The scuttle is:

Rep. Tom Tancredo will drop out of the presidential race tomorrow and endorse either Mitt Romney or Fred Thompson.... neither of those candidates know who, just yet.

But the scuttle is probably wrong. Tancredo has been critical of all his opponents, and, given his issue's saliency, he does not need to endorse. His party sounds like him, now, on immigration.

yeah hi, I'd add to that he thought, "the politicians weren't looking at the $1000 donations anymore because they could get all this (soft money) over here". He wanted to do something to put the focus back on the individual's contribution. He said it was his amendment that caused the change from $1000 to $2000 indexed to inflation.

I still don't like other aspects of mclame-feingold. I at least understood his logic. Had I been on stage, I would have added to his statement that if he's successful as president and gets a proper federalism back in place, then mclame-feingold will be irrelevant. With power dispersed amongst the state and local level that would force too much dilution of lobby money for lobbyists to have much effect.

I like tanc, but I disagree with his legal immigration view. He thinks we should eliminated it for a while...I don’t.

What did he say about McCain-Feingold?

Here you go...

Thompson Defends Campaign Donation Limit

...At an eastern Iowa campaign event, a man in the audience said he liked the former Tennessee senator's conservative thinking on most issues but questioned his support for the McCain-Feingold Act....

Thompson said contribution limits had been in place for many years at the $1,000 level, but he believed that was too low. He says he helped to double that amount and bring it into line with inflation. Currently, the limit on contributions is $2,300.

"The rule has been, you've got to have money to run in politics, but we're not going to make the amount so high that it looks as though there is undue influence," he said.

Thompson said he doesn't like some provisions in the McCain-Feingold legislation, including one that limits contributions to some political organizations to the same level as individual contributions.

"That was an error. I was wrong about that, I wouldn't do that again," he said.

He blamed former President Clinton and political consultant Dick Morris for a windfall of soft money in the 1990s that corrupted the system and led to the need for reform.

"They didn't invent it, but they pretty much did, and they certainly perfected it, the so-called soft money deal," Thompson said.

Instead of blowing the whistle on such corruption, he said Republicans joined up.

"We started doing the same thing, and it became a soft-money race. The little guy ... got lost in the shuffle," he said.

That is especially true on the immigration front, since he ran on a platform of comprehensive immigration reform that included giving people already in the U.S. a shot to stay here.

That would work for me as well, it’s just as ludicrous.

Bummer Tancredo is dropping out....but he has stood firm against illegal-alienism even though the GOP has gone liberal to Bolshevik on the issue.

My support will now go w Hunter, regardless of Tanc’s support. If he does endorse someone, I doubt it will be Hunter or Thompson. They are the most consistent on illegal alienism

Wonder if Tanc will reconsider and run for Congress again...or an upcoming Senate seat.

“He should endorse the honest one - Hunter.”

Yep. It might just be the boost that Hunter needs.

He dropped out, he wrote me, because:

“The presidential campaign has come down to less than a handful of viable candidates. Unfortunately several of them have abysmal records on immigration and can’t be trusted to do what is needed to preserve this country if they’re elected. My fear is that if I were to stay in this race my votes could be the factor in handing victory to a pro-amnesty politician. Friends, we have done too much, come too far and the stakes are too high to play that hand. And so I am ending my presidential campaign.

I know there are many more battles in our future and you can count on me to stay in this fight with you. We must continue to build the unquestioned momentum that is fueling our movement today. In the weeks ahead, I will write to you again to share with you my plans for the future, and for the immigration reform movement that is transforming American politics.”

So, while he isn’t endorsing anyone, I think it is pretty obvious from the timing (He needs to get going on his Senate run for Allard who is retiring) that he’s not done with politics yet!

He won’t endorse Hunter who has absolutely no chance of winning. That would be a wasted endorsement as Hunter himself (whose campaign emailed me asking for money recently) is probably close to dropping out. Regarding FT, his Immigration Statement—crafted by some big-name anti-Invasion leaders—is the strongest of the first tier candidates BUT Thompson has been his own worst enemy, running a campaign that is in dissaray. Would Tanc endorse Mr. Sleepy?

Romney sanctuary cities

But my little bit of comfort is, at least it wasn’t Rudy:

“CNN clip:

Announcer: “Back in 1996, mayor Giuliani went to federal court to challenge new federal laws requiring the city to inform the federal government about illegal immigrants.”

Rudy Giuliani: “There isn’t a mayor or a public official in this country that’s more strongly pro immigrant than I am. Including disagreeing with President Clinton when he signed an anti-immigration legislation about two or three years ago.”’

John Kerry was only 4% in the polls 3 weeks before the primaries.

Hunter can win, too, if conservatives have the courage to support him.

I bet Kerry’s supporters didn’t give up.
