DURHAM -- In a filing Tuesday in Federal Court, unindicted Duke Lacrosse players are suing Duke University, the City of Durham, Duke University professors, Mike Nifong and the DNA lab involved in the case.
The suit also names doctors and nurses who treated the alleged victim the night she claimed she'd been raped at a party. The players are also suing City Manager Patrick Baker and former Durham Police Chief Stephen Chalmers. As part of the investigation, the unindicted players had to give up DNA samples and were named in the school paper.
In the 404-page lawsuit, the players say that Duke University, the City of Durham and the other defendants were part of a "conspiracy to railroad 47 Duke University students" based on "the transparently false claim of rape, sexual offense, and kidnapping made by a clinically unreliable accuser." Also in the lawsuit, the players say that the accuser's claim was "taken virtually from her lips and fashioned into a weapon in the hands of those who would leverage outrage."

Every plaintiff feels they have cause. This one of those rare cases where normally lawsuit abhorrent FReepers can see it. Go figure.
Fantastic. They should receive tens of millions each; starting out of the pockets of the 88.
“In many areas of the country, the jury system is broken, largely for reasons of racism and class warfare.”
.....ain’t that the truth!...I used to live in the Baltimore-Washington area and saw outrageous examples of jury nullification in the news every day....there’s a whole flock of lawyers out there who are channeling Johnny Cochran and winning big verdicts.
“Further, this entire affair was fueled by Nifongs correct perception of the racist climate that exists in Durham.”
.....exactly!....he played Robespierre to the mob....all for political gain.
This is one lawsuit I am happy to see. The treatment of these students was nothing short of disgusting.
You have no sympathy for the students because they caused their own troubles.
If so, you should be consistent and also have no sympathy (and that includes civil matters) for those who are being sued, because like the students, they also engaged in actions which brought about severe consequences.
That being said, I followed this from early on, and many of us also agreed that the students should never have hired the stripper. We understood too that what followed wouldn't have happened because they did hire them. But we moved on pretty quickly because we also understood that what was emerging was terrifying and despicable. It's filth went far beyond anything the students did, and decency and justice required it to be addressed and opposed.
I have read enough of the positions of the other people I pinged to understand that none of us believes that if someone makes a mistake, that it is permissible for them to be penalized far beyond what is normally imposed for the mistake, and that it is also permissible for the persons administering that punishment to disregard the laws and procedures they took oaths to uphold.
This is where I perceive your core position seems to be. The students did something you didn't support. Therefore, any punishment, no matter how unfair was warranted. And any person administering that punishment was justified, no matter how corrupt.
And one last thing. If the students had not hired the stripper, the events following would have not occurred. And, Nifong might still be DA (assuming he won the elections) and none of those who have been exposed would have been disciplined. And most likely, many many people, like the students, would continue to be railroaded by a devastatingly corrupt system. Would that be a reasonable trade off to you?
It was a legal activity. What should the risk be? 30 years to life? Being murdered in jail for being a rapist of Black women?, having your parents penurized and sent to the hospital for Health duress?
How about if the risk for YOU jaywalking was to have your testicles burned off with a flame torch? Would you like to live in a world like that, Mr Prurient , phony Chaplain Man of God with no sense of proportion Self righteous mirror gazer?
Oh, God. I keep thinking it will get less painful, but like a train wreck I keep looking and can’t turn away. It never will get less painful. Every single thing we personally went through and to think there are people who believe that this is the way the Constitution is supposed to work. There are days I think a firing squad with every single deluded person responsible should be assembled and the trigger pulled. Make it quick, make it painless, but make it happen.
both of you read the entire post #172
read the first line one more time
I did. My conclusion remains the same.
Thanks.
I thought it was “unindicted co-conspirator”?
Which is redundant.
So, we now have TWO words that were MADE UP.

I can’t help it if you can’t think. Unfortunately, there is nothing I can link to to help you either.
I was thinking of the high school level, reading comprehension section. Go ahead and check it out. It’s not a stigma for someone to want to better himself.
no, this is NOT how it should be....
a decent and honest prosecutor backup-ed by decent and honest judges would never had let this go so far....not to mention decent and honest college professors.
I wanted these young men to have their day in court but I hope they don't drag this into a zillion dollar heist on their part....
Say goodnight Dick.
So xzins probably agrees with John Murtha’s snap assessment that the Marines at Haditha are war criminals. If only they hadn’t had the poor judgment to join the military they wouldn’t have been turned into baby killers.
