Palestinian officials warned of a humanitarian and environmental disaster in Gaza, due to a shortage of cement to build graves in which to bury the dead.
"The situation in Gaza is tragic," said Deputy Minister Abdullah Jarboa of the Palestinian Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs, according to Quds Press.
"The sick are not allowed to seek treatment outside, medicines are not allowed in, and there is no cement to build graves," Jarboa said.
After the Islamic Hamas movement took control of the poor and densely-populated enclave in mid-June, Israel closed the Gaza crossings to all but essential food products.
If the crossings remain closed and no more cement is allowed into the strip, a real crisis will take place, Jarboa warned.
He added that the Ministry builds one thousand graves every year, but there are few left and new ones need to be built.
According to Jarboa, many existing graves are in danger of erosion because they are built using tin sheets instead of concrete from the last time Gaza ran out of cement due to the Israeli blockade seven years ago.
Jerboa pleaded with the International Community, the Arab League, and the Organization of Islamic Conference to exert pressure on Israel to lift the embargo and allow food, medicine, and cement into the strip.

Warning! This is a high-volume ping list.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
Perhaps, if they would quit killing every human being in sight they would have enough cement to bury those that die naturally?
Why can’t they just bury them in dirt like everybody else?
They might be wanting to build obstacles with the concrete.
Hey, I hear North Korea has a good deal on cement. They’ll bring it right to you. Why don’t you ask Ahmadinejad?
Cement? I’ve lived all over in the world, in a variety of cultures, and have never heard of cement being a normal part of grave “building”.
This is a result of choices they stubbornly chose to make.
It was their choice to live and die under these circumstances.
Great point! Must be a religious thing ;-)
It's for underwater cemeteries, where loved ones "sleep with the fishes."
Stack them like cord wood and drop a match.
How symbolic. This all the the Palestinian terrorist leaders ever build for their people or care to build for their people - death. Never was a group less deserving of their own country and less able to run one if they had it. Building is not their goal. With the enormous amounts that have poured into these corrupt Palestinians Muslims from around the world for so many decades, they could have built a Taj Mahal for every family and left them all rich for life. Instead the leaders - and that all of them, Hamas, Hezbollah, Fatah, stash it all away for themselves. What’s left they use for weapons and antiIsrael and antiwest lies. The world does not need another official terrorist state. Bush is wrong is calling for one.
Subhead: "Civilized people of the world take up collection so Palestinians can have as many graves as possible."
Too bad they don't have any sewers, either (the effluent just runs raw in the streets) -- otherwise, they could just dump their dead in there; they'd be right at home floating with the other waste...
So what?
Gaza may be closed to Israel but it still has a border with Egypt. Should be no problem getting what they need from them.
No tears from me.
