What is a bigger and wider problem is that too many people feel no hesitation to go spouting off about things they know nothing about. Shouldn't this man have won some kind of a medal by now??? At least a Nobel or something???

Thomas Sowell is an American Treasure. This is a wonderful post.
Now, I hope we can get him to write about the Church shooting in Colorado, and the Heroine who stopped it.

“that the police used excessive force”
In some cases they do. I was taught to fire two rounds, check target fire again. Some of these police departments firing 50 rounds at someone before they know what the heck is going on.

People who have never run even a modest little business assert with great certainty and indignation that heads of multinational corporations are paid much more than they are worth. How dare Dr. Sowell describe every single candidate for the Democrat nomination in this way! :.)

Only part of the problem is that many people have no idea of the capabilities and limitations of different kinds of guns, much less how much difference it makes if the shooter is in the safety of a firing range or in the stress of a life and death battle. ADDED-ESPECIALLY THE MEDIA.

Any intruder who hears the distinctive sound that is made when you load a shotgun is likely to decide that he would much rather be somewhere else, very quickly. Nor is he likely to return.
We don't own a shotgun yet, but this is the very reason why it's my husband's choice to have at home. He said the sound alone would make a grown man pee in his pants.

Any intruder who hears the distinctive sound that is made when you load a shotgun is likely to decide that he would much rather be somewhere else May be nit picking but I wouldn't have an unloaded shot gun in my house. I might not have time to load it. I have no little ones at home though and at Christmas time, when they are all here, there is no gun anywhere that they are likely to find. I say "likely" because I never underestimate the ingenuity of a toddler, they must be watched closer than a democrat on election day.

I qualified expert with the Army’s Colt .45 automatic. Not an easy feat when you consider that the weapons we used were so old that the barrels rattled in the carriage and the targets had been shot so many times they had holes big enough to put your fist through. I was convinced that I would have had a better chance to qualify by throwing the damn thing at the target rather than shooting at it.
