UPDATED: 4:20 pm MST December 9, 2007DENVER -- Authorities said several people were shot outside the New Life Church in Colorado Springs Sunday afternoon.
Reports indicated three to five people were shot in the parking lot just after 1 p.m. The late service would have been ending just at the shooting occurred.
The victims were rushed to area hospitals to receive treatment, said Fletcher Howard of the Colorado Springs Police Department.
One suspect was taken into custody, Howard said, and police were searching the area for any other suspects.
Reports indicated that the suspect was one of the people who had been shot. His condition was not released.
Investigators also reported they found a pipe bomb in the parking lot of the church. A K-9 unit from the Air Force Academy has been called out to the scene to assist investigators. [emphasis mine]
Police said they did not believe the shooting is connected with shootings earlier Sunday at a missionary training center in Arvada.
"We are not in a place to confirm any information about any possible similarities to these incidents," said Arvada Police Chief Don Wick at a news conference Sunday afternoon.
Two people died in that incident.
New Life is the 10,000-member megachurch that was thrown into the national spotlight last year when pastor Ted Haggard admitted to "sexual immorality" following allegations he paid a man for sex.
By "no link," do they mean "not the same shooter"?
If so, then that itself may very well be evidence OF a link. Multiple separate similar attacks are an AlQ trademark.
