Michigan House Passes Ban On Smoking In Bars, Restaurants
POSTED: 7:47 am EST December 6, 2007

Smoking in Michigan workplaces, including bars and restaurants, would be banned under legislation passed by the Democratic-led state House.
The vote is a victory for supporters, who have been pushing the measure for a decade.
But it may not get very far in the Senate because majority Republicans oppose it.
Backers say a majority of state residents want a broad workplace smoking ban, and point to the harmful effects of secondhand smoke on employees and patrons.
Opponents say smoking is legal and government shouldn't interfere with the rights of private property owners.
Casinos, horse tracks, bingo halls, cigar bars and smoke shops would be exempt from the smoking ban.
I've opted to bypass the college student liberalism and be realistic.
You are giving the nanny staters more amunition - smokers are forcing them to be subjected to dangerous chemicals because they must purge themselves of the nasty smoking smell.
ATC: You misread my response. It was intended to be for College Repub.
Or maybe ATC I misread your response which was only intended to be a comment. LOL
Your sweat don’t stink?
It was for general comment only. I’m an 80 year old wrapped in an 18 year old body.
...and I write that as I listen to Glenn Miller’s WWII-Big Band Swing.
Lol! Actually, I’m remarkably unstinky under my arms, but I make up for it by smoking. :)
If you would like to be added or dropped from the Michigan ping list, please freepmail me.
Our legislature at work.
Do you have the History Channel's 2-CD set called "Til Then". Excellent. This is not the music of my era but it is my favorite. My mother's era but I loved it so much I claim it too. Many years ago we attended a New Year's Eve dance affair and had the privilege to dance to the Glenn Miller Band under the direction of Buddy Morrow. A night I will never forget and the dance steps we love to dance to learned through Fred Astaire studio. See your Private messages.
I also remember visiting my husband, before we were married, while he was at work at Radio Shack. We'd hang out on the salesfloor, smoking. That was back in 1990.
No idea, but I bet it's quite a few. Our state budget is nothing more than smoke and mirrors...a magic trick which adeptly makes money from our pockets disappear.
Funny, isn't it? The House dims have the time to vote on legislation which is sure to be killed in the Senate, and they still haven't wrapped up the budget...
You are soooooo on the wrong forum, dear! Thanks for the chuckle
The economy in Michigan is the worst in the nations. Employers are leaving in droves. Lansing is in chaos and THIS is what the democrats are wasting their time on???
Yup, thank goodness they’re finally taking steps to strengthen our languishing economy, crippling unemployment, and bloated government.
Just Damn—gave myself away. LOL
yeah, its really, REALLY irritating, especially to me. i have a job offer that’s dependant on one of the budget bills being passed.
*sigh*
and in the mean time, they’re passing around bills about helmet laws and smoking bans.
If the dims had put any thought into it, they'd have realized that this is a money-making opportunity. What does a store, restaurant, bar etc do if they want to sell alcohol? They apply for a license ($$$). Let's imagine our state gubmint goes that route: How else, besides licensing fees, can they make money off of establishments friendly to smokers? Why not require--as a condition of licensing--special ventilation systems? ($$$ KA-CHING $$$--unionized mechanical contractors making money, permit department raking in the fees, code compliance heavies finding faults everywhere, assessing all kinds of violation fees...)
I'm astounded that the dims would go for an outright ban, when a golden calf, chewing on tobacco leaves, is just a-sittin in yonder pasture!
Kinda scary, just how easily I can slip into the mind of a dim...
