ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Two days after naming its mascot "PorkChop," the Philadelphia Phillies' new Triple-A affiliate abruptly dropped the moniker after receiving complaints from Hispanics that it was offensive.
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs, whose mascot is a large, furry pig, had selected PorkChop from more than 7,300 fan submissions. The team, which begins play in 2008, announced Monday that the mascot will be named "Ferrous" instead.
General Manager Kurt Landes said he heard from several Hispanics who said PorkChop was derogatory.

In most cities, this wouldn’t be a problem, but the Hispanic/Latino population-mostly of Puerto Rican descent-in Allentown is almost 25%. The Iron Pigs are hoping that they will get a good cut of leisure spending by Puerto Ricans in the city.
IMO, this is not so much a “PC” decision as a marketing one.
Are the Portuguese considered Hispanic? For some reason I bet if you called one a Hispanic ... it would fry his pork chops!

I’m going to start my own religion. The derogatory word for it is “Clinton”. From now on, anyone who uses the word “Clinton” is being offensive to my religion.

The slur in my area is ‘beaner’ which makes more sense than “pork chop.”

If I was in charge of this team there would be a hardy GFYS to anyone who complained about the mascot name.
I find the naming of your pig "ferrous" offensive to people like me who have metallurgically hard gonads. This is not a condition people like you would understand.
If I may offer an less offensive name - how about Roxanne or Rosie?

Perhaps the General Manager should hear from a few thousand Americans about "Porkchop" as the mascot.
