ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Two days after naming its mascot "PorkChop," the Philadelphia Phillies' new Triple-A affiliate abruptly dropped the moniker after receiving complaints from Hispanics that it was offensive.

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs, whose mascot is a large, furry pig, had selected PorkChop from more than 7,300 fan submissions. The team, which begins play in 2008, announced Monday that the mascot will be named "Ferrous" instead.

General Manager Kurt Landes said he heard from several Hispanics who said PorkChop was derogatory.

But apparently calling a Portuguese person Spanish IS offensive. Does the same apply for the article calling them Hispanic? LOL

“Pork chop” is better than calling one’s team: “Chicharron”!

Do I have to change my screen name?

Nah, simply alter what the abbreviation means. It's a golden opportunity to ratchet up the number of people chapped by the meaning.

I have no idea at all why Pork Chop can be offensive to any one at all!
What has happened is that there are now big, gaping traps that have opened up. We just don’t see them. They look like ordinary words and actions. In fact, many people are not caught in the traps. Only some people are caught in the traps. White, Christian males are caught in the traps.
All of a sudden, with no advance warning, words and actions that were always OK, are now bad and can get you to lose your job or thrown in jail.
All it takes is someone who is a member of a privileged group who complains and uses the critical word “offended”.

“nooses” and the N-word are two examples.

If our society is getting so dainty and fragile then I wonder what sort of future do we face.

Political Correctness has taught everyone that there is a right to not be offended. It's the new right, after Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness (although I'm not so sure about the shelf life of Liberty).

Mizzou safety Pig Brown is not at all offended by his nickname. He said his Mom gave it to him:

“When I was younger, I ate a lot. I was sloppy, and I just had the mentality of a pig, and my Mom said, ‘you eat like one, you act like one; that’s what I’m going to call you,’ and that just stuck. As for the favorite food, it’s hot dogs — back then and now.”

Oh my gosh! The news outlet will now have to apologize for the offense and take mandatory sensitivity classes! [sigh]

I’ve been saying it for a while. If people get offended and fly off the handle and the most trivial of things, how are we supposed to face the terrorists?? If ever we faced a REAL challenge to our security from Russia or China, can we even stand up to them when large segments of our society get upset over mere words? I hate to think about it.

I think these several Hispanic dudes are mistaken in their complaint.

FWIW, I grew up in the Lehigh Valley, and yeah, "pork chop" meant "Puerto Rican", and it was derogatory. I'm surprised to learn that the term is not universal.

That said, this is a bad move whether the term is offensive or not. By finding a more benign use for "pork chop", they would have reduced its power to hurt. By treating it instead as a forbidden utterance, they've conferred more power unto it.
